OP still lived with his family and waited for them all to go to bed before opening a window and lighting a pipe. After a while, he noticed something moving outside that seemed to be a hedgehog.

Hedgehogs are pretty common in their area, and his first thought was to rescue the poor creature before it froze to death in the winter conditions. He started cleaning his pipe after hatching a rescue mission, but it clumsily slipped out of his hand and fell.

In his high mind, he now had to get the pipe before anyone found out he smoked. It would be too suspicious if he went out suddenly, so he thought he would leave a note to avoid concerning his family.

The rundown of the rescue mission was to get into gear, meaning grabbing the gloves and bucket, then running out to find the hedgehog.

As he got closer to the neighbor's yard, he realized that something was off. It turns out the hedgehog he’d been tailing was just a shadow!

Now he was outside with a bucket and gloves, without an explanation if he’d get caught. OP ran back to pick up the pipe and put everything back, but the gnawing feeling that someone would confront him about what happened scared him.
