Why Marvel’s 2027 movie calendar could hinge on one Secret Wars filming date
A new claim says Avengers: Secret Wars may not start filming until February 2027, putting its December 2027 release in doubt.
Marvel has not changed its release calendar, but one new claim has suddenly made Avengers: Secret Wars look far less locked in than it did on paper. If filming really waits until February 2027, the current December 2027 release date could be difficult for Disney and Marvel Studios to keep.
Why Secret Wars is suddenly in question
Phase Six is built around two Avengers films, Avengers: Doomsday in 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027, with Joe and Anthony Russo directing both. Secret Wars has been described as especially important because Kevin Feige has discussed it as the film that could reset the MCU around a single timeline.
The latest shift is not an official schedule change. It is a new claim that Secret Wars may not begin filming until February 2027. That matters because earlier chatter pointed to a much earlier start. In August, production tracking suggested the movie had already started work at a UK base and then paused for about five weeks, with the break expected to run until late September.
That reading was disputed. Daniel Richtman said Doomsday was still in reshoots and that Secret Wars was expected to start at the end of September. MTTSH also said the material being shot was additional photography for Doomsday, not Secret Wars. Anthony Russo has since said Doomsday was already deep into post-production, with work continuing on areas including the score and sound mix, while only confirming that Secret Wars prep was underway without giving a firm start date.

Who could feel the impact, and when
For now, nothing on Marvel’s public calendar has changed. Avengers: Doomsday is still dated for December 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars is still set for December 2027.
What has changed is how realistic that second date now looks if the February 2027 filming window is accurate. An Avengers movie of this size would need a long post-production run, especially for visual effects, so a start that late would put serious pressure on a December 2027 release and could move the film into 2028.
That would affect more than one title. A shift for Secret Wars could leave the MCU without a theatrical release in 2027. It could also disrupt projects lined up around it, including the X-Men movie confirmed at D23 Expo 2026. That film was introduced alongside an almost complete cast, including Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, after her first appearance in the role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Because mutants are expected to be central to the MCU after Secret Wars, any delay to Marvel’s next Avengers endpoint could push that next chapter back as well. Until Marvel Studios says otherwise, though, the February 2027 start remains a possibility, not a confirmed plan.
