The unanswered phone call that made RJ Mitte's mother realise something was wrong before his death
RJ Mitte's mother has shared the missed warning sign, her tribute, and why she says the actor's death came as a shock.
One missed phone call was the moment RJ Mitte's mother says made her realise something was wrong. In the weeks since the Breaking Bad actor's death at 34, Dyna Mitte has shared both a public tribute to her son and a deeply personal account of the warning sign she did not at first recognise.
The moment she says felt different
Dyna Mitte has said her son's death was unexpected, even though she had started to worry about him because of the conversations he had been having with her, his team and his friends.
According to her, the moment that finally stood out was when RJ did not answer the phone. She said they spoke regularly, and that was the point at which she understood it as a red flag. She also said she believed he had seemed to be in a better place, describing him as someone she thought had got past a difficult stretch and was okay.
She said she had encouraged him to speak to a counsellor and told him it was helpful to have an outside person with no personal stake in the situation. She wanted him to talk through his feelings and the way he was seeing things. Even with those efforts, she said she and the rest of the family never expected he would take his own life.
Dyna has said she believes her son suffered a mental health setback and made the decision in what she described as a weak moment. She also said he had been dealing with personal troubles and had opened up to his family, but that did not prepare them for what happened. Speaking about discovering him, she said no mother should ever have to find her child that way.
A tribute built from a lifetime of memories
In an Instagram post shared after his death, Dyna wrote about the son she said had inspired people from the beginning. She said that from the time she and her then husband, Roy Frank Mitte Jr., brought RJ home at three days old, he had a way of sharing his heart with everyone he met.
RJ had been diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of three. In her tribute, his mother reflected on the work it took for him to first manage the condition and then thrive with it, before finding his place in acting. She said those achievements came through hard work and that he kept moving toward the next challenge.
She also described how easily he connected with other people. Watching him with others, she said, was a source of joy, and she remembered the way he could quickly make people feel as if they were family.
Some of her most vivid memories came from travel. When RJ went away for work, she said he turned those trips into adventures. She wrote that whether they were in Florida or Lithuania, he seemed to know the historical details and the places they should see, and that they would go simply because his curiosity kept pulling them forward.
Her tribute also focused on the side of RJ that looked outward. She said she was proud of everything he overcame and praised the empathy he showed to people who needed him to speak up for them. In her telling, that role was not something he carried unwillingly. It was something he cared deeply about.

The family story behind the actor people knew from Breaking Bad
For many viewers, RJ Mitte was best known for playing Walter White Jr. on Breaking Bad, the son of Bryan Cranston's character Walter White. But his family life had shaped him long before fame arrived.
Dyna said RJ became the main breadwinner for the family when he was just 13. That came after a car accident ruptured her spine and left her paralysed below the waist for years. The detail adds another layer to how his mother remembered him: not simply as a successful actor, but as someone who took on responsibility early.
In her tribute, she described life with him as a constant adventure. The public image of an actor with recognisable screen credits sat alongside the private image she painted of a son who carried responsibility, loved learning, and threw himself into whatever came next.
She also made clear that the grief inside the family has been immense. In her post, she said they were lost without him, while also saying she believed he would not want them to remain that way. She added that he would have wanted his message to be heard and the work they had been doing with The Mitte Foundation in Brownsville to continue.
The foundation, established by RJ's paternal grandparents, describes its aim as improving the quality of life of Central Texans. Dyna linked that ongoing work to the values she said mattered to her son.
Why his mother wanted to push back on the rumours
Alongside her memories of RJ, Dyna also addressed speculation that had emerged after his death. She said suggestions that his career had fallen away were wrong.
According to her, he had three films already released that year, two more still to come out, and several new film deals already signed. She also said there had been discussions around other projects, including a book and a food truck he was starting. Her point was that professionally, he had a lot in motion.
She similarly rejected claims that an old financial issue involving a manager had anything to do with his death. She said that matter had happened years earlier, had already been resolved and was unrelated to what had happened now.
Dyna also touched on talk around RJ's relationship with his fiancée. She said he had seen her only three or four times since the woman moved in December. While she acknowledged there had been struggles, she did not want to go further into his personal life.
Taken together, her comments drew a picture of someone whose death could not be explained away by a single simple story. She stressed that there were personal troubles and mental health difficulties, but also insisted that some of the louder assumptions about career collapse or unresolved money problems did not match reality as she understood it.

How he has been remembered
RJ was remembered at a Celebration of Life ceremony held at the Mitte Center in Brownsville, Texas, on Friday.
His death also prompted tributes from people who had worked with him during the role that made him famous. Bryan Cranston said he was in deep despair after the tragedy. Aaron Paul said he was at a loss, adding that he was heartbroken by the news and that RJ would be missed.
For his mother, the public response has become part of the mourning process. In her Instagram message, she told supporters that she was seeing their messages and would respond when she could. She described her son as an especially sensitive person who had done so much for his family, his community and the wider world, and said they would mourn him for the rest of their lives.
Her account leaves behind a heartbreaking detail that is difficult to shake. Before all the tributes, before the ceremony, before the messages from co-stars and fans, there was a call that went unanswered. For Dyna Mitte, that was the moment that turned ordinary concern into something she knew she could not ignore.
