Roommates Rental Application Lies Cause Rent Payment Standoff

Discover how a shocking revelation about roommates' deception on rental applications leads to a dilemma over rent payments and potential consequences.

A 28-year-old woman refused to keep paying rent when her roommates got caught lying on their rental applications, and now the whole apartment is stuck in a standoff.

It started after the landlord sent a letter asking for a review, even though everyone had already submitted their info when they moved in a year ago. During the meeting, OP learned her roommates, a 31-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman, allegedly inflated their salaries and claimed prestigious jobs, basically pulling the kind of “trust me” move that can blow up a lease.

Now OP is withholding her portion of the rent, and the roommates are calling her unreasonable while threatening to drag the landlord into it.

So I'm (28F), and recently, I found myself in a tricky situation with my roommates (31M and 29F). Everything was going well in our shared apartment until one day, we received a letter from our landlord stating that they needed to review our rental applications.

I was surprised because we had all submitted our information when we moved in a year ago. During the meeting with the landlord, it was revealed that my roommates had lied on their applications about their income and employment status.

They had inflated their salaries and claimed to work at prestigious companies to secure the lease. The landlord was understandably upset and warned us that this breach of trust could lead to legal consequences.

I was shocked and felt betrayed. I work hard to pay my rent on time and be honest in all my dealings.

I confronted my roommates about this deception, but they shrugged it off, saying it was common practice and shouldn't affect me. However, I cannot overlook the fact that their actions put all of us at risk of losing our home.

I've decided not to pay my portion of the rent until they come clean to the landlord and rectify the situation. They have started pressuring me, calling me unreasonable and threatening to involve the landlord if I don't comply.

The tension in the apartment is palpable, and I'm unsure of what to do next. So AITA?

The moment the landlord told OP about the salary inflation and fake employment claims, the “we’re fine” apartment mood instantly cracked.

This also echoes the roommate who rented out the spare room on Airbnb, and the other roommate refused utilities.

OP confronted the 31-year-old man and 29-year-old woman, and their shrugging response, “it’s common practice,” only made the betrayal worse.

When OP refused to pay her rent until they “come clean” and fix it, the pressure turned into direct calls and threats about involving the landlord.

With every threat landing right after that landlord warning about legal trouble, the tension between OP and the roommates got downright palpable.
