Roommates Severe Allergies vs. New Puppy: AITA for Saying No?

AITA for not allowing my roommate to bring a puppy home despite her severe pet allergies? Roommate insists she can manage but I worry about her health.

A 28-year-old woman says she tried to stop a disaster before it started, but her roommate turned it into a full-blown drama about happiness, control, and a new puppy. And honestly, once you hear the stakes, it’s hard to see how this ended up as a “who’s the villain” situation instead of a basic safety issue.

OP shares an apartment with a 26-year-old roommate who loves animals, like, genuinely loves them. The problem is, she has severe pet allergies, they’ve already landed her in medical trouble before, and she’s still determined to adopt a rescue puppy, claiming she can manage everything with medication. OP, worried by the past flare-ups and the doctor’s warnings she refuses to follow, suggests maybe bringing the puppy home is a bad idea. Her roommate hears “don’t be happy,” and now she’s furious, threatening to move out just to get the puppy.

Here’s the part where OP’s attempt at a simple “please don’t risk it” turns into a roommate feud.

Original Post

I (28F) share an apartment with my roommate (26F) who absolutely loves animals. She recently planned to adopt a rescue puppy and was overjoyed about it.

The issue is, she has severe pet allergies, but she's convinced she can manage them with medication. For background, her allergies have caused serious health issues in the past and she's had to seek medical attention multiple times.

Despite this, she refuses to listen to her doctor's advice about avoiding pets. Knowing all this, I gently suggested to her that maybe it wouldn't be the best idea to bring a puppy into our home due to her allergies.

I was concerned for her health and well-being. She got extremely defensive and accused me of being controlling and unsupportive of her happiness.

She argued that she could handle the allergies and that it was her decision to make. I care about her a lot, but I also don't want to see her suffer due to her stubbornness.

She's now angry with me and is considering moving out just to get the puppy. So, Reddit, AITA for refusing to let my roommate bring her new puppy home despite her severe pet allergies?

I honestly don't know if I'm wrong here.

It’s a lot like the Reddit roommate who banned their dog from the bed after severe allergy flare-ups.

The whole mess kicks off when OP watches her roommate celebrate a rescue puppy plan while ignoring the fact her allergies have already caused serious health scares.

Things get uglier when OP gently brings up the allergy risk, and her roommate fires back that OP is controlling and trying to steal her joy.

The argument escalates fast because OP isn’t debating the puppy’s cute factor, she’s pointing to the roommate’s history of needing help after pet exposure.

Now it’s not just a disagreement, her roommate is talking about moving out so she can bring the puppy in anyway, which makes OP wonder if she really crossed a line.

What do you think about this situation? Let us know in the comments.

If the puppy is worth moving out over, OP might be the one who ends up better off.
