Roommates Toxic Ex Causes Rift: AITA for Asking Him to Move Out?

AITA for confronting my roommate about her toxic ex overstaying his welcome, causing a rift between us and leading to a heated argument?

Sarah and OP had a pretty peaceful roommate setup, until Mike showed up and turned the apartment into a permanent argument zone. What started as “temporary housing” quickly became snide comments, tension in the air, and that sinking feeling when you hear his voice in the hallway.

OP (27F) and Sarah (26F) were getting along, with mutual respect for each other’s space, but Mike (Sarah’s toxic ex) kept crossing lines. After a heated blowup where he went too far with disrespectful comments, OP finally pushed Sarah to ask him to move out, even though Sarah was hesitant at first, hoping he’d find somewhere else.

Then the conversation turned into a full shouting match, and now Sarah is giving OP the cold shoulder while Mike ignores her completely.

I (27F) have been living with my roommate, Sarah (26F), for about a year now. We get along well and have mutual respect for each other's space.

Sarah recently broke up with her long-term boyfriend, Mike, who had been staying with us temporarily due to his own housing issues. For context, Mike is known for his confrontational and toxic behavior.

He often made snide remarks, disrupted the peace at home, and created tension between Sarah and me. Despite this, Sarah was hesitant to ask him to leave, hoping he would find a new place soon.

After a particularly heated argument between Mike and me, where he crossed a line with disrespectful comments, I reached my breaking point and spoke to Sarah about asking him to move out. I explained that his presence was affecting our living situation negatively and creating a toxic environment.

Sarah initially defended Mike, citing his tough situation post-breakup, but eventually agreed to talk to him. However, the conversation turned into a shouting match, with Mike accusing me of intruding and Sarah of not supporting him enough.

This led to a huge blowout, with Sarah upset at me for pushing the issue and Mike feeling cornered. Now, Sarah is giving me the cold shoulder, and Mike is ignoring me completely.

I feel like I did the right thing to preserve the peace at home, but the fallout has strained my relationship with Sarah. AITA for asking Sarah's toxic ex to move out, ultimately leading to a massive argument?

Mike’s toxic behavior and the roommate tension here feel similar to the partner who invited their ex to stay, then got asked to leave.

The vibe was fine until Mike’s “temporary” stay turned into daily tension and snide remarks from him toward OP.

After Mike crossed the line in that heated argument, OP stopped biting her tongue and brought it up to Sarah directly.

Sarah agreed to talk to Mike, but the moment it happened, the whole thing detonated into accusations and a shouting match.

Now OP is stuck with the fallout, Sarah is cold, and Mike is acting like OP is the enemy in their own home.
