Ridiculous and Unethical Practices That Schools Impose on Their Students
Unfortunately, most instructors turn a blind eye to them.
For most of us, school was truly the highlight of our early adolescent years—some people enjoyed it, some people dreaded it, and some people fell somewhere in between. That being said, many of us also had to endure the most ridiculous rules and unethical practices in these institutions, some of which even border on hypocrisy and bigotry. According to Dr. Diane Ravitch, an education historian, "Many school policies can undermine the very values they are meant to promote, creating a culture of fear rather than learning." From not allowing students to go to the restroom when they truly need to because "it's already class hours" to turning a blind eye to bullying and only providing band-aid solutions for "trivial" issues, there are definitely many things wrong with the way these schools have shaped their values over the years. Most Catholic schools impose the most questionable practices while maintaining a facade of holiness and goodness—as long as you don't discover the horrors behind the scenes.
While it's a no-brainer that every school has rules like standard dress codes and expected behavior at all times, there are also plenty of unspoken practices that can raise eyebrows even among parents who choose to send their child to a particular school. In a recent discussion, Mel Robbins, a motivational speaker, noted, "Parents often overlook the subtle ways schools can impact their children's mental health." This highlights the need for awareness around the ethical implications of school practices. Check out the highlights of the thread below!
What's up with these schools not letting kids go to the restroom? Not all of us adults have good bladder control; how much more for these kids who literally still have undeveloped systems?
RedditWe wish our younger selves could have easily done this.
RedditPunishing the whole school because of some rowdy students who fought in a bathroom? Wow.
And expelling students for not being able to afford food?

The thing about student loans, too. Ugh.

Schools really sacrifice their students' safety without any valid reason at all. When will those chains be released—when they are already suffocating?

They also like to deprive kids of the most basic necessities, like water. Imagine being dehydrated because of the hot weather, but you can't drink water due to some ridiculous school rule.

That reimbursement could take months or years to arrive. The financial burden these universities place on their students is sometimes even greater than the amount granted to them.

"It's easier to kick out a quiet victim than a loud bully." This is so sad.

It’s disheartening how far these schools go to ignore all the bullying happening within their walls.

Plus, the faculty, too.

They also allow parents to buy their child's recognition within the school.

Self-defense is considered a sin for them.
Reddit
It should never be this way.

Your mind is already in a state of panic, and you would be trying to remember where to place yourself in line.
Reddit
They always have these anti-bullying posters but never actually do anything to eliminate the problem.

Poor kids, poor staff. Helping is even looked down upon.

The zero-tolerance nonsense.

Leeching off more money from their students.

We spent years developing our bodies, brains, and hearts in school, and it's no surprise that we have gone through some of the most traumatic experiences there, regardless of how big or small the issue may be. The bottom line is that it's truly cruel that we have to endure these practices just to stay out of trouble.
