Sailor Moon Senshi Characters Get A Zodiac And Galaxy Inspired Series Thanks To This Creative Artist
Inspired by a client commissioning artwork, this Sailor Moon series is truly unique and amazing.
Artist Alan Gutierrez has a knack for turning familiar pop culture into something that feels fresh and cosmic. His science fiction and fantasy illustrations have earned plenty of attention over the years, and one of his most eye-catching projects started with a big Sailor Moon commission for a client who wanted the Senshi reimagined in a new way.
That first series led to another request, this time blending Sailor Scout energy with zodiac signs and galaxy-inspired details. The result is a colorful lineup of characters that feels both playful and polished, with each design bringing its own celestial twist.
From moons and planets to constellations and star signs, this series has plenty to look at. Read on.
1. Sailor Taurus
"This was my favorite of this idea. After this, I returned to the more portrait style, but I think the series would not have been complete without this important aspect of the Zodiacs."
Alan Gutierrez2. Sailor Capricorn
"This is one of my favorites of the series. I had the chance to mix a mythical creature with a beautiful Senshi Zodiac in a water setting, making this a very enjoyable experience!"
Alan Gutierrez3. Sailor Orion and Bellatrix
"This features the only male Senshi Zodiac. I added Sailor Bellatrix on my own. The only idea I wanted to convey about her was that she is a Senshi of a 'dark' nature."
Alan Gutierrez
The celestial theme really starts to take shape here.
4. Sailor Charon
"She's the leader of the Zodiac Senshi, which I associated with great power, like Sailor Saturn. The scene depicts destruction—different from the pastoral scenes of many of the other Zodiacs. Even what she's lying on recalls a crypt. I also gave her eyes a somewhat dark and mysterious appearance."
Alan Gutierrez
5. Sailor Pisces
"I made the cape appear transparent since the idea of an invisible cape was a bit hard to convey."
Alan Gutierrez
6. Sailor Gemini
"This is a great example of a purple-green color system I learned while studying Goethe's color theory at the Art Center College of Design. It’s one of my favorites of the series."
Alan Gutierrez
7. Sailor Leo
"The first of several animals I wanted to incorporate into the series."
Alan Gutierrez
8. Sailor Europa
"Europa rides across the heavens upon Zeus, transformed into a white bull, wielding her javelin—a gift from Zeus used as a weapon for her attacks."
Alan Gutierrez
Each design keeps the Sailor Moon spirit while leaning into its own cosmic identity.
9. Sailor Libra
"The idea behind this was a 'historical' Senshi past, using an ancient statue of a previous Sailor Libra. It was very hard to find a suitable reference for the boa, a weapon originating in Africa, I believe."
Alan Gutierrez
10. Sailor Scorpio
"This was voted the most popular of the Senshi Zodiacs in a poll on my website."
Alan Gutierrez
11. Sailor Gemini (alternate)
"When I created the original Sailor Gemini during the Zodiac Senshi series 11 years ago, I wanted this idea of a twin or mirror image, which would be left somewhat vague to the viewer."
Alan Gutierrez
12. Sailor Phobos (Phobos is the innermost and larger of the two natural satellites of Mars)
"Phobos is on her home moon, with Mars and Deimos (Mars' other moon) in the background. Mars would appear much larger in reality."
Alan Gutierrez
13. Sailor Aries
"This was a very rewarding piece for me, especially when seen large. I thought the attack effect was nice, using some distortion filters."
Alan Gutierrez
14. Sailor Sagittarius

The lineup keeps getting more inventive with every new character.
This feels like the AITA dilemma about choosing a professional pet sitter over a struggling friend.
15. Sailor Triton
"She, like Sailor Nereid, draws her power from the ocean by calling upon King Triton's own life force, shaped in his image from the sea itself, then amplified through the trident."
Alan Gutierrez
16. Sailor Cancer
"An attempt at a more 'sexy' Senshi, in a windswept prairie-style setting."
Alan Gutierrez
17. Sailor Hyperion
"This started out as a 'star-gate' painting, but, unable to achieve the desired effect, I decided on Mesoamerican motifs as the main background theme. Hyperion, in Greek, means 'Watcher from above', so I used the sun image, which is so much a part of Mesoamerican culture."
Alan Gutierrez
18. Sailor Caliban
Alan Gutierrez
19. Sailor Virgo
"...Sailor Virgo, passing through the star-gate, the method of travel between the worlds of the galaxy."
Alan Gutierrez
20. Sailor Andromeda (In Greek mythology, Andromeda is the daughter of the king of Aethiopia, Cepheus, and his wife, Cassiopeia.)
Alan Gutierrez
By now, the series has fully settled into its own style.
21. Sailor Nereid
"I had this one planned out even before 'Senshi of the Galaxies' was finished. This is another 'Senshi in Motion' painting and gives an idea of what Senshi are capable of... She draws her power from the ocean and the stars. Nereid is the daughter of the sea god Nereus in mythology, so water had to be included in this piece."
Alan Gutierrez
22. Sailor Stardust

23. Sailor Umbriel
Alan Gutierrez
24. Sailor Titan (Titan is Saturn's largest moon)
"Since everything connected with Titan suggests size and strength, I made Sailor Titan the strongest of the Senshi Zodiacs. She draws her power from the molten magma cores of planets. In this way, she can lift anything."
Alan Gutierrez
25. Sailor Aquarius
Alan Gutierrez
26. Sailor Io (Io has 400 active volcanoes and is touted to be the innermost moon of the gaseous giant planet Jupiter.)
"Sailor Io is the only Zodiac that does not use the star-gate. She has the ability to teleport and can go anywhere in the galaxy."
Alan Gutierrez
This is the kind of fan art that makes the whole concept feel bigger.
