Servers Share The Dumbest Things Customers Have Done Or Said (20 Images)

These stories are so unbelievable, yet sadly true.

Working in the food service industry is well-known for being a difficult and unpleasant job. Long hours, low pay, and unpleasant supervisors may not be the toughest aspects of the job.

For many staff members, it's the nightmare of clients who believe they have the right to treat others poorly. These individuals deserve to be publicly chastised for acting like complete jerks, whether they are physically abusing servers, taking tips, or allowing their children to run around as if it's their playground.

Of course, there is also that second type of obnoxious customer—the ones who are just plain clueless and completely unaware of the world around them. They are not necessarily mean, but they have extremely odd requests and expect everyone to accommodate them.

And there is a third type of restaurant guest... Oh, there are simply too many types of awful restaurant guests—we can't list them all here.

Fortunately, most people are well aware of the challenges service workers face and treat them with the respect they deserve.

A few days ago, Twitter user Zu sent a well-deserved shout-out to all brave servers, and soon the thread was filled with service workers' horror stories.

There are several types of degrading and disrespectful behavior, according to Melanie Morrison, Ph.D., a psychology professor at the University of Saskatchewan. First, there's the issue of social dominance, which refers to people who believe they are entitled to be more powerful and dominant than others.

"There's still that belief that they have a socially dominant position, that they have more power over this individual, and that they'll treat them in a demeaning way because of that," she says of these individuals who are often leaders in an organization with subordinates lower on the hierarchical structure.

And then there is the second type. It’s those small people who are afraid to speak out at their workplaces, in college, at the doctor's office, etc.

This creates a great deal of resentment in them. When they finally get the chance to speak to someone who has no influence on their lives and doesn’t pose a threat, they suddenly find their voice and start acting as if servers are their minions.
