Should I Have Loaned My Brother Tires? AITA Story

AITA for refusing to lend my brother tires for his SUV inspection? Reddit users weigh in on the ethical dilemma and potential consequences.

It started with a car that wasn’t even supposed to be a big deal, and somehow ended with tires being the main character of the family drama. OP has a Kia SUV they bought for their daughter, and it’s the kind of vehicle you keep around because it hauls stuff, stays sturdy, and does not complain about getting dirty.

Then the brother calls, like he’s just checking in, and casually drops that someone offered him a similar SUV. Cool, right? But OP knows the real reason he’s calling, and sure enough, he asks to borrow the SUV tires. His plan is wild: swap them onto his SUV for an inspection, then put them back after. OP says no, and the brother flips out, calling them an AH.

Now OP has to deal with the fallout, and it all hinges on whether those tires were “no big deal” or the kind of favor you do not touch.

I have a Kia SUV I bought for my daughter a few years ago. When she got her own vehicle, she gave it back.

I have kept it because it's good to haul stuff on and not worry about getting dirty and it has more room than my car. My brother calls me the other day and said that someone gave him one almost like it.

Runs good but has about 200K miles on it. I'm glad for him, but I know when he calls, it's to ask for something.

This one shocked me: He wanted to borrow the tires off our SUV, put them on his SUV to have it inspected, and then switch them back. I told him NO.

He was upset and told me I was an AH.

OP’s Kia SUV has been sitting there doing its job, hauling and staying reliable, so the brother’s sudden tire request feels less like help and more like a setup.

When the brother says he just needs the tires for his inspection and will switch them back, OP hears the real ask underneath the “temporary” part.

The moment OP refuses, the conversation stops being about vehicle logistics and turns into a power struggle over who gets to take what from the family stash.

With the brother calling OP an AH after the tire swap plan gets shut down, the family dinner vibes are basically already ruined.
