Should My Girlfriend Use Our Fun Money for Debt and Expenses?

AITA for wanting to spend our gifted money on fun activities with my girlfriend, while she prefers to use it to pay off debt and expenses?

A 28-year-old woman and her boyfriend were gifted some money by their families, and it should have been an easy win. Instead, it turned into a full-on money debate over what “fun” even means when one person is juggling debt and the other is bringing in steadier income.

He makes “rather good money,” she’s still in college and a bit short, not because she can’t cover rent, but because fun stuff keeps falling off the calendar. On top of that, she has debt she does not need to pay off right away, but it still weighs on her confidence and choices.

So when she suggested splitting the gift, using her half for debt and this month’s expenses, he pushed back hard, insisting they should spend it together on something they both enjoy.

Original Post

Some background: I make rather good money while my girlfriend is in college and a bit short on money. Not like she can't pay rent but not being able to do any fun stuff etc.

That often. She also has a bit of debt (which doesn't have to be paid that soon btw) which she isn't able to pay off right now.

Recently we were gifted some money from family which I want to do something fun with her for. Since she doesn't have much money we can't really do it as much as I would have wanted.

She said that she wanted to split the money and use it to pay off a part of her debt and use for this month's expenses. I told her that it is our money and that we should use it together for something fun.

Her stance is that she doesn't have any money and wouldn't feel comfortable using the money splurging on herself while she pretty much can't buy Christmas gifts for her family (her words). So aita for wanting to use our money for something fun the two of us could do together instead of her using her part for basic stuff?

Edit: Both of our families got together and gifted the money to us as a couple.

If you’re dealing with constant pressure like the sister who kept demanding babysitting, this person had to figure out when to refuse babysitting for family harmony.

When the gift money landed, OP immediately pictured a shared date, not a spreadsheet kind of month for his girlfriend.

Her logic was basically, “I have no extra cash,” so she felt guilty using “our” money to splurge while her Christmas gifts for her family were already shaky.

OP countered that since both families gifted them as a couple, the money should be treated as joint fun money, not her debt plan plus his vacation.

After the edit, the whole argument gets messier, because it confirms both sides of the family meant this gift for the couple, not just for one person to manage.

How would you handle this situation? Let us know in the comments.

The family gift was supposed to buy happiness together, but it exposed who felt more entitled to comfort.
