Should I Request Fairer Rent Split After Discovering Roommates Financial Support?

"Discover how a Reddit user navigates a tricky roommate situation involving unequal financial support and debates if adjusting the rent split is fair. AITA?"

A 28-year-old woman refused to pretend her rent situation was “just how it is” after realizing her roommates were getting help from their families. And once she found out, the whole apartment vibe shifted from casual roommate math to full-on fairness debate.

She shares a three-bedroom place with Alex and Sam, and they split the rent evenly. But when Sam casually mentioned their parents covering expenses, including rent, she got suspicious. Then she dug a little more and discovered Alex is also receiving financial support, meaning she is the only one paying their portion with no safety net.

Now she wants a rent split that matches who can actually afford it, and her roommates are calling it none of her business.

Original Post

So, I'm (28F) living with two roommates, Alex and Sam, both in their mid-20s. We share a three-bedroom apartment and split the rent evenly.

Recently, during a casual conversation, Sam mentioned how lucky they are to have their parents help cover their expenses, including rent. This surprised me as I work full-time and budget carefully to afford my share.

After some digging, I found out that Alex also receives financial support from their family. So essentially, I'm the only one paying their portion independently.

It bothers me that I'm the only one solely responsible for my rent while they have financial assistance. I feel like it's unfair for me to bear the full burden when they could contribute more without issue.

I brought up the topic of adjusting the rent split based on each person's financial situation, but they both seemed defensive and claimed it's none of my business. I understand that family support is a personal matter, but it doesn't sit right with me that I'm struggling to make ends meet while they have extra funds available.

Would I be the a*****e if I pushed for a fairer distribution of rent based on our individual financial standings? I know it could cause tension, but I can't shake the feeling of inequity in our living situation.

So, AITA?

Sam drops the “my parents help with rent” line, and OP’s brain instantly starts doing the math she did not want to do.

OP digs further and realizes Alex is getting family support too, which turns “even split” into “OP is subsidizing both.”

She brings up adjusting the rent based on financial reality, and Alex and Sam hit back with defensive “not your business” energy.

The roommates act like the conversation is off-limits, but OP is still stuck paying the full burden while they have extra money floating around.

What do you think about this situation? Let us know in the comments.

The rent split drama is really about one thing, OP is paying for everyone’s comfort.

Wait until you read how one roommate refused to pay their share after a higher-paying job.
