Should I Split Conference Expenses Equally with Co-Worker Who Attended for Personal Gain?

"Debating if I should split conference expenses with co-worker who prioritized personal fun over professional growth - AITA for suggesting otherwise?"

Some people treat a work conference like it’s a free vacation with a side of networking, and this story is exactly that mess. But once Alex gets there, he mostly parties with industry contacts, skips key workshops, then returns acting like everything was great while admitting he did not attend many of the important sessions.

Now the team has to split the remaining budget, and Alex expects an equal share like everyone else, even though the trip was supposed to be for professional development.

Okay, so I'm (29F) part of a small team at work. Recently, we had a crucial industry conference coming up, and our boss allocated a budget for one team member to attend.

The expected purpose was to gather knowledge and network for the benefit of our projects. My co-worker (33M), let's call him Alex, was selected to represent us.

However, during the conference, instead of focusing on work-related sessions, Alex spent most of his time partying with industry contacts and having a good time. He attended only a few relevant workshops.

Upon returning, Alex casually mentioned how great the conference was but admitted he didn't attend many key sessions. I was taken aback by his attitude, considering the expense incurred.

When it came time to split the remaining budget among the team, as we usually do, Alex expected an equal share like the rest of us. I raised my concern, mentioning that the purpose of the conference was primarily professional development, and since Alex didn't fully contribute to that, it didn't seem fair for him to take an equal share.

I suggested he cover his extras himself. Alex got defensive, claiming he still represented our team and deserved an equal split regardless of how he spent his time there.

Our boss, unaware of the conference details, left the decision to us. Now the team dynamics are tense, with me sticking to my viewpoint.

So WIBTA for insisting Alex covers his personal enjoyment expenses from the conference separate from our team budget share?

NTA - Alex chose personal fun over professional development. It's fair to split expenses based on contribution.

While Alex is out partying with “industry contacts,” OP is stuck doing the math on what the team actually paid for.

Bruh, NTA. Alex should cover his party antics himself. Work expenses are for work, not personal enjoyment.

NTA - Alex is taking advantage. Splitting costs should reflect actual contributions.

After Alex admits he skipped the key workshops, OP pushes back when the remaining budget comes time to be split.

NTA - Work budgets are for work purposes. Alex should cover his party expenses separately.

That’s similar to the AITA fight where one coworker refused to cover a forgetful colleague’s work expenses.

NTA - If Alex didn't utilize the conference for work, he shouldn't expect an equal split. Fair's fair.

NTA - Work expenses should align with work activities. Alex wanting an equal share for personal fun is unreasonable.

Alex argues he still “represented the team,” but OP points out the budget was for work, not personal enjoyment.

NTA - Alex needs to learn the difference between work expenses and personal party expenses. You're right to stand your ground.

NTA - It's work funds, not party funds. Alex should cover his non-work-related expenses.

With their boss out of the loop and the team dynamics already tense, OP has to decide whether to hold the line or fold.

NTA - Alex's choices shouldn't affect the team's budget. Fair treatment based on effort is essential.

NTA - If Alex didn't contribute professionally, it's fair for him to cover his personal expenses. Team budgets are for team efforts.

Nobody wants to split the bill for someone else’s party, especially when the workshops were the whole point.
