Why a Sioux Falls Rescue Is Keeping Black Cats Off the Adoption List Until Nov. 1
Almost Home Canine Rescue in Sioux Falls has paused adoptions of black and mostly black cats through Sunday, Nov. 1.
A group of cats in Sioux Falls is temporarily off the adoption list for a reason tied to Halloween season. Almost Home Canine Rescue has put a hold on adoptions of black and mostly black cats, with the pause running through Sunday, Nov. 1.
The change affects anyone hoping to adopt a black or mostly black cat from the rescue right now. The shelter said those cats are being kept out of adoptions for the moment and will stay that way until staff believe it is safe for them.
The rescue explained the decision in a Facebook post. Its reason is protection during Halloween season, which falls during October, also recognized as Black Cat Awareness Month. Staff said the hold is simply about doing what is best for the cats' safety.
The concern is not only about black cats being seen as spooky. Information cited from Catster says there is a slight increase in cruelty cases involving black cats around Halloween across the country. It also notes that some people adopt black cats because they fit the holiday image, then return them to shelters after Halloween is over.
For adopters, the key date is Sunday, Nov. 1. Until then, black and mostly black cats at Almost Home Canine Rescue will not be available to go home. The shelter also encouraged people who want to adopt one of these cats to apply, even while the temporary pause remains in place.
