EPCOT’s Coral Reef Restaurant Has a New Clue Outside, and Disney Hasn’t Said What It Means Yet
Fresh pavement cuts have appeared outside EPCOT’s Coral Reef Restaurant after its September refurbishment, with the walkway still open to guests.
A new round of visible work has appeared outside one of EPCOT’s longest-running restaurants. Guests heading to Coral Reef Restaurant can now spot fresh pavement cuts near the entrance, following a recent refurbishment that already changed part of the area.
What changed outside Coral Reef Restaurant
Coral Reef Restaurant, which opened on January 15, 1986 with The Living Seas pavilion, is seeing more activity around its exterior. New straight cuts are visible across sections of the reddish pavement outside the restaurant, creating smaller divided sections in the concrete.
Some of those cuts continue into the neighboring gray walkway, including space around a manhole cover. Even with the new scoring in place, the walkway has remained open, so EPCOT visitors can still pass through the area.
Disney has not announced what the cuts are for. The work could point to more concrete replacement, but no official explanation has been given. There is also no confirmation that this is part of a broader overhaul at The Seas pavilion, which was later reimagined as The Seas with Nemo and Friends.
For fans of EPCOT history, Coral Reef stands out as one of the park’s older dining locations. The restaurant has stayed a familiar stop through decades of changes elsewhere in the park, largely because of its dining room views into the large aquarium.

Why guests may recognize the area looking different
The new pavement work follows a temporary closure that began on September 8, 2026. Coral Reef Restaurant reopened on September 29 after work that reportedly included updates to parts of the kitchen.
That closure also brought a noticeable exterior change. Decorative pavement was added outside the entrance, replacing some of the older surface with a design that fits the setting around The Seas. The updated section includes a wavy pattern and small white seashells set into the concrete.
Another curved area nearby already has white shell details, and rolling planters remain in place under the monorail beam near the pavilion’s blue wave mural. Because of that earlier refresh, it is possible the latest cuts are related to more walkway work in the same style, but Disney has not confirmed that.
What this means for guests is simple for now: if you are visiting EPCOT soon, expect to see signs of ongoing work outside Coral Reef Restaurant, but not a closed path or a newly announced restaurant shutdown.
