Spider-Man’s Mephisto showdown is finally set, and Marvel may be circling its most divisive Spidey story
Marvel is setting up Spider-Man vs. Mephisto in Avengers 2026, a fight with possible fallout for One More Day and Peter and MJ.
Marvel appears to be moving toward a confrontation Spider-Man readers have waited years to see. Peter Parker is being positioned to face Mephisto in the first arc of the next Avengers run in 2026, a development that immediately puts fresh attention on the lingering fallout of One More Day.
What changed for Spider-Man, and when
The new piece of movement is clear: Spider-Man is heading into a direct clash with Mephisto, and it is set up to happen in the opening arc of the next Avengers series in 2026.
The path there starts with Avengers: Armageddon. In that event, the Avengers split apart as governments around the world raised concerns about unchecked superhero power. Peter is described as the one hero who still believes the world needs the Avengers, leaving him in position to assemble a new team even without public support.
Another key setup beat involves Iron Man. Tony Stark obtained a device created by the late Doctor Doom that could show the future. When he used it to imagine a reality where the heroes corrected their mistakes, the vision that mattered most was Mephisto holding Spider-Man’s broken body. That image points directly to a fight between the two, and soon.
For Marvel readers, that is the headline shift. A long-running Spider-Man thread that has hung over Peter and Mary Jane for years is no longer just background. It is now tied to the launch arc of a major Avengers title.

Why One More Day fans are watching this so closely
The reason this matters goes beyond a simple villain match-up. Mephisto is the figure at the center of One More Day, the storyline in which Peter and MJ made a deal that erased their marriage. Any story that puts Peter across from him instantly raises the question of whether Marvel is preparing to revisit that decision in a meaningful way.
The current status quo gives readers more reasons to wonder. Mephisto has been forced out of Hell after Doctor Doom took it over, leaving him weakened and looking for a new realm to rule. Earth is presented as vulnerable because it currently lacks both the Avengers and a Sorcerer Supreme.
There are also several Spider-Man specific threads in play. Doom’s takeover of Hell included burning Mephisto’s contracts, which freed souls bound by them. Peter’s soul had already been freed earlier by Doctor Strange, but the broader destruction of those contracts has fueled fresh speculation that the deal Peter and MJ made could be starting to unravel.
At the same time, MJ has broken her bond with the Venom symbiote, become more active in Spider-Man’s corner of Marvel, and is starring in her own solo series. Aunt May has also forgotten Peter’s identity. None of that confirms a reversal of One More Day, but it does mean Spider-Man readers now have a date to watch: the first arc of Avengers in 2026.
