Why ‘the Shine’ Just Entered Star Wars Lore, Without Renaming the Force
Marvel’s The Fall of Kylo Ren #3 gives the Knights of Ren their own Force vocabulary, including the Shine and the Shadow.
A new Star Wars comic has sparked a familiar kind of fan debate: did Lucasfilm just change what the Force is called? The short answer is no, but The Fall of Kylo Ren #3 does add a new layer to sequel era lore by showing that the Knights of Ren use their own names for its two sides.
What changed in The Fall of Kylo Ren #3
Marvel’s Star Wars: The Fall of Kylo Ren #3 reveals that the Knights of Ren call the light side of the Force “the Shine” and the dark side “the Shadow.” The issue also introduces another term through Tava Ren, who describes someone as possibly “radiant,” a word that appears to be the group’s label for someone who is Force-sensitive.
That change takes effect in issue #3, which Marvel says was released on Wednesday, Oct. 21. It affects readers following Kylo Ren’s story in the current five-issue limited series from writer Charles Soule and artist Will Sliney, and it adds a distinct bit of vocabulary to one of the sequel trilogy’s more mysterious factions.
What it does not do is replace the usual Star Wars language. The Force is still the Force, and the familiar light side and dark side terms still apply for Jedi and Sith. The new wording belongs specifically to the Knights of Ren, an ancient order presented as having its own traditions and worldview.
The series itself is set between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. In this stretch of the timeline, Kylo Ren is Supreme Leader of the First Order and back alongside the Knights of Ren. Marvel’s synopsis for issue #3 says Kylo seizes brutal control of the group as a new threat attacks his flagship, while Generals Hux and Pryde maneuver for power inside the First Order.

Why this sounds new, but also familiar
Star Wars has used alternate Force terminology before. In the Star Wars Rebels Season 3 premiere, “Steps Into Shadow,” Kanan Jarrus meets the Bendu on Atollon, and the Bendu refers to the Jedi side as “Ashla” and the Sith side as “Bogan,” while placing himself in the middle. Those names reach back even further to George Lucas’ early drafts of the original film.
That history helps explain why the new Knights of Ren terms have drawn mixed reactions rather than a clear consensus. Some fans argued that the Force did not need more names. Others saw the reveal as exactly what it looks like on the page: one group in the galaxy describing a familiar power in its own language. Some also pointed out that “the Shine” sounds very close to Stephen King’s “the shining.”
For Star Wars readers, the real update is not a franchise-wide rename. It is a small but notable world-building detail in a comic that still has two issues left to go.
