Tenant Enforces No-Pet Policy: AITA for Reporting Neighbors Secret Dog?
"AITA for reporting my neighbor's secret dog in a no-pet building, causing tension? Redditors debate the ethics of upholding rules vs. compassion."
A 28-year-old tenant thought she was just being a normal neighbor, until a “no-pet” rule turned into a full-blown secret-dog situation. It started with a casual chat, the kind that usually ends with a quick smile and a “see you later,” not a mystery barking sound in the background.
OP says the building has a strict no-pet policy, and her neighbor, a woman in her 30s, has apparently been sneaking a dog anyway. The giveaway was the barking, followed by the neighbor instantly shushing the animal like it was a crime scene, not her own apartment. OP then took the heat to the landlord anonymously, and now the neighbor is avoiding her after a notice about pet violations and possible penalties.
So now OP is stuck wondering if she did the right thing, or if she just lit the fuse on their neighborly relationship.
Original Post
So I'm (28F) a tenant in a building with a strict 'no-pet' policy. Recently, I discovered that my neighbor (30sF) has been secretly keeping a dog in her apartment against the rules. Last week, while chatting with my neighbor, her dog barked in the background.
She quickly shushed the dog, but that's when I realized she's been sneaking a pet in. I feel conflicted because I don't want to cause trouble, but at the same time, it doesn't seem right for her to break the rules everyone else follows.
I decided to report the situation to our landlord anonymously. Yesterday, the landlord issued a notice about pet violations in the building, hinting at potential penalties.
My neighbor now seems stressed and avoids eye contact with me. I know I technically did what was right by following the rules, but she might face consequences because of my actions.
AITA for reporting my neighbor's secret dog even though it caused tension between us?

This is close to the AITA where someone felt guilty for reporting their noisy neighbors to the landlord.

The moment OP heard the dog bark during that friendly conversation, everything about her neighbor’s “perfectly normal” routine started to feel suspicious.
When OP reported it anonymously and the landlord sent out a pet-violation notice, that shushed-barking moment came back to haunt her.
Now the neighbor in her 30s is stressed, avoiding eye contact, and acting like OP is the reason her entire apartment life might get messy.
And the worst part, OP knows she followed the rules, but she also knows she turned a secret dog into real consequences for someone she has to keep seeing.
What do you think about this situation? Let us know in the comments.
OP might have protected the building’s rules, but she also may have made the hallway feel colder than the no-pet policy ever did.
