The Darth Vader lightsaber from Star Wars’ biggest reveal is up for auction again

Heritage Auctions has listed Darth Vader’s original dueling lightsaber prop with a $1 million starting bid.

A screen-used Darth Vader lightsaber tied to some of the original trilogy’s most important moments is back on the market. Heritage Auctions has listed the prop with an opening bid of $1,000,000, making it one of the biggest current targets for high-end Star Wars collectors.

This is the combat-ready Vader lightsaber used by David Prowse, the performer inside the suit, and by Olympic fencer Bob Anderson for fight scenes. Heritage says the prop was used for dueling in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, rather than one of the separate bladeless hilts used in scenes without lightsaber action. In the clip below, the listing gets a closer look.

That makes this a notable piece from the original trilogy for fans who care about exactly which version of a prop appeared on screen. The saber is linked to pivotal Vader scenes, including the Cloud City duel in The Empire Strikes Back, where Luke Skywalker learns the truth about his father. For the fight work, the hilt was reinforced so it could hold wooden blades, which were later given the familiar red lightsaber effect in post-production. Those blades were replaced during filming as they wore out, while the hilt itself remained in use across two movies and still shows scuffing and other production wear.

Why this listing stands out

The prop also has an unusual build. According to the auction listing, the Star Wars crew created it from a 1950s British Micro Precision Products, or M.P.P., Microflash camera flash attachment, then altered it into the lightsaber hilt seen on screen.

Its return to auction matters because this exact piece has already made Star Wars collecting history. Last year, it sold for $3,654,000, which set a world-record auction price for a screen-used Star Wars prop. That mark did not last. Earlier this year, Luke Skywalker’s prop lightsaber passed it.

What changed now is simple: Vader’s original dueling saber is once again available, and bidding starts at $1,000,000. For most fans, that puts it far out of reach. For elite collectors, though, one of the most recognizable weapons in Star Wars is currently back in play.
