Why 27 rollercoaster riders ended up sitting 50ft in the air on the country's only ride of its kind

A rollercoaster at Pleasurewood Hills stopped 50ft up, leaving 27 riders stranded for hours before firefighters brought them down.

The strangest part of the scene was that nobody was upside down. The Wipeout rollercoaster at Pleasurewood Hills stopped high above the ground with 27 people still sitting upright in their seats, and they remained there for more than three hours while firefighters carried out a rescue. What should have been a fast blast through loops became a long wait in full view of the park.

The incident happened just before 1.30pm at Pleasurewood Hills in Lowestoft, Suffolk, where the Wipeout came to a halt on the track around 50ft in the air, or about 15 metres. Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said the carriages were suspended high above the ground but were not inverted.

That detail made the pictures especially unusual. Images shared by the fire service showed riders still upright in their seats, paused on a section of track instead of hanging upside down on a loop. Even so, it was a major operation. Crews from three fire stations went to the park as passengers remained stuck for several hours.

The fire service said specialist rescue-at-height methods would be used. Firefighters then brought all 27 passengers safely back to the ground with an aerial ladder and a scissor lift. Nobody was injured.

A parent on board said the ride did not simply stall

One account from a passenger added a more detailed picture of what happened on the ride itself. Writing on Facebook, the passenger said their children were on Wipeout and described the experience as frightening for both them and the family watching.

The same post said the coaster had not stalled in the usual sense. According to that version, it became stuck on the back straight. When it was released, the rear brake did not stop it properly, and the train moved very slowly back toward the loop, rocking back and forth before coming to a stop on the middle section.

That helps explain why the rescue image looked so different from what many people might expect from a rollercoaster malfunction. Wipeout did not leave riders dangling upside down. Instead, it left them stranded high in the air, visible and waiting, while emergency crews worked from below.

The ride is already unusual before anything goes wrong

Wipeout is a surfing-themed coaster that opened at Pleasurewood Hills in 2007. The park billed it as the tallest, fastest and most extreme ride in East Anglia.

It also stands apart for another reason. The coaster is the only Vekoma Boomerang in the country. That model sends riders down a lift hill and through a cobra roll and a vertical loop, making it a headline attraction even on a normal day.

This time, though, the most talked-about part of the ride was not the drop or the loop. It was the sight of 27 people left suspended above the park until firefighters could get every one of them down safely.

How a rollercoaster works

A rollercoaster is designed to move through the track in a controlled way, not just at top speed. Depending on the ride type, the train may be pulled up by a lift system, launched by motors, or suspended beneath the track so riders’ legs hang free. Brakes are built into the layout to manage spacing, speed and stopping points, and the train is constantly monitored by sensors.

Modern rides are set up to stop automatically if those sensors detect something outside normal limits. That can be as simple as a restraint not reading as fully locked, a train not reaching the right position, weather affecting operation, or a power or control fault. A stop high above the ground can look dramatic, but a stopped train usually means the safety system has done what it is supposed to do: prevent movement until staff can check everything properly.

Why riders can end up waiting

When a ride stops in an awkward spot, restarting it is not always as easy as pressing a button. Operators may need to confirm the train’s exact position, reset control systems, inspect restraints and speak directly to riders before deciding whether the train can move again or needs to be evacuated.

Evacuation procedures vary by ride design. Some coasters have walkways along parts of the track. Others need staff to bring access equipment or guide riders out one row at a time. That process can be slow on purpose. The aim is to keep people calm, secured and moving safely, especially if the train is tilted, suspended or exposed to wind, heat or rain.

What riders should do if a coaster stops

If you ever get stuck on a ride, the most useful thing is to stay seated, keep your restraint fastened and wait for instructions. Do not try to film your way out, stand up, reach for belongings or force the restraint open. Staff need riders to stay still so they can judge the safest next step.

If you are nervous about rides generally, it helps to know your limits before boarding. Ask attendants whether the ride includes inversions, launches or long stops on a lift hill. Secure loose items, mention any accessibility or medical concerns before you board, and pay attention to the safety briefing even if you have ridden coasters before. Most stoppages are temporary, but knowing what to expect makes the experience far less stressful.
