Tom Hanks’ Dark 1989 Cult Favorite Is Getting a New 4K Steelbook After ‘The ’Burbs’ Streaming Revival
The ’Burbs returns in a limited 4K steelbook on Dec. 15, 2026, carrying over its earlier restoration and extras.
One of Tom Hanks’ stranger late 1980s movies is heading back to shelves in a new collector’s edition. The ’Burbs, Joe Dante’s suburban paranoia comedy, is getting a limited 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray steelbook as renewed attention around its streaming reboot pushes the 1989 film back into view.
A new edition is coming in December
Shout! Factory is reissuing The ’Burbs as a limited edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray steelbook, with release set for Dec. 15, 2026. The update is not a brand-new restoration. Instead, it repackages the studio’s earlier 4K collector’s edition in collectible metal packaging under the Shout Select line.
The most noticeable change is the case itself. The steelbook uses new artwork showing Hanks with a panicked expression, while the earlier 4K release used the original 1989 theatrical poster art. For buyers who already own the standard 4K disc, that means the fresh packaging is the main difference this time around.
The film centers on Hanks as Ray Peterson, a suburbanite planning to spend his vacation at home before suspicion builds around the Klopek family next door. Joe Dante directed the movie, and the cast also includes Bruce Dern as Lt. Mark Rumsfield, Carrie Fisher as Carol Peterson and Rick Ducommun as Art Weingartner.

What collectors get, and why the timing matters
The set keeps the same bonus materials from the previous 4K edition. According to the pre-order listing, that includes a 4K restoration from the original camera negative supervised and approved by Dante, plus Dolby Vision presentation.
Extras also include three feature-length audio commentaries: one with critics Drew McWeeny and Eric Vespe, one with critics Emily Higgins and Julia Cunningham, and one with screenwriter Dana Olsen moderated by author Calum Waddell. Also included are the documentary There Goes the Neighborhood: The Making of The ’Burbs, interviews with Dante, photographer John Hora and editor Marshall Harvey, the original workprint from Dante’s archive, a behind-the-scenes still gallery and a stills and poster gallery.
The release arrives as interest in The ’Burbs has surged again through the recent series reboot. The adaptation logged more than 1.7 billion viewing minutes, delivered Peacock’s biggest opening day for an original comedy and has already been renewed for a second season. That puts the new steelbook squarely in front of two groups at once: longtime fans of the 1989 movie and viewers who found the property through the newer series.
