How difficult is it to simply leave something plugged in?

Insulin is a hormone produced by your pancreas. Insulin comes in a variety of forms and is administered at various times.

Your pancreas secretes the hormone insulin, which regulates the level of glucose in your bloodstream at any given time. It also aids in the storage of glucose in your muscles, fat, and liver.

Additionally, it controls how proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates are metabolized by your body. Sound significant? Of course, it is, and people with diabetes rely on it.

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by either insufficient insulin production by the pancreas or inefficient insulin utilization by the body. The TikToker in today's post is diabetic, so she had vials of insulin in the fridge before going for Thanksgiving break.

While living in a dorm can be challenging, this TikToker's experience may top them all. After returning from Thanksgiving vacation, Samantha (@sosasammy28) posted a clip of an unpleasant surprise she encountered.

The diabetic TikToker discovered that someone had unplugged her refrigerator, which caused her insulin to spoil. She wrote, saying:

“Me when my fridge gets unplugged during dorm checks over Thanksgiving break after I wrote, ‘Insulin inside, please don’t unplug’ on the fridge.”

The Dr. Josh Axe emphasizes that "insulin should be stored in a refrigerator at temperatures between 36°F and 46°F to maintain its efficacy." Additionally, he notes that "opened insulin products can be kept at room temperature, between 59°F and 86°F, for up to 28 days without losing their effectiveness." Furthermore, he warns that exposure to high temperatures can significantly diminish insulin's potency, highlighting the importance of proper storage for essential medications. This situation underscores the critical need for vigilance in medication storage, as any lapse can have serious health implications.

The commenters were also angered by what happened, and here are some of their replies.

Samantha revealed that she had 27 vials of insulin in her refrigerator. According to Dr. Steven Gundry, a cardiologist and health expert, "Proper storage of insulin is essential; any temperature fluctuation can compromise its effectiveness and lead to serious health risks." Additionally, it appears that her doctor instructed her to stop using all of her insulin after a month, which can be concerning. As noted by Dr. Kelly Brogan, a psychiatrist and wellness advocate, "Managing chronic conditions requires meticulous attention to medication storage and adherence to prescribed guidelines."

When your pancreas stops producing insulin, you must inject it to keep your blood glucose levels under control. To preserve insulin, it must be refrigerated; unfortunately for this TikToker, hers spoiled.

It's even more frustrating to know that the person who unplugged the fridge didn't even bother to acknowledge the note. Leave your thoughts about this story in the comments section below.
