Disney+ Brings Darkwing Duck Back With a 35 Year Twist and a New Voice Cast
Disney+ has ordered a Darkwing Duck reboot with Mark Hamill and Seth Rogen. Here is the premise, cast, and what is still unannounced.
Disney+ has officially ordered a new Darkwing Duck animated series, reviving one of the best known Disney Afternoon titles for streaming. The newly announced version centers on a long missing Darkwing and pairs him with an unexpected new generation of characters, led by voices including Mark Hamill and Seth Rogen.
What changed for Disney+ fans
The biggest update is simple: Darkwing Duck is no longer just a long discussed project. Disney+ has now given the animated reboot a series order, adding it to the platform's upcoming lineup.
The story is being framed as a continuation after the original show. In this version, Drake Mallard, better known as Darkwing Duck, has spent 35 years trapped in an alternate world where nobody knows about his superhero past. He gets pulled back into action by Duckie, a rebellious teenager who does know his history. Their new mission brings Darkwing back into fights with enemies including Negaduck and Megavolt, while reconnecting him with allies such as Launchpad, Gosalyn and Morgana.
For Disney+ subscribers, the immediate change is that the reboot is officially on the way. What has not changed yet is the release calendar. A streaming date has not been announced.
The cast, the creative team and the legacy behind it
Mark Hamill is set to voice Darkwing Duck, and Seth Rogen will play Launchpad McQuack. The announced cast also includes Lizzy Caplan as Gosalyn Mallard, Lilimar as Duckie, Dan Stevens as Glade McTowers, Tiffany Shepis as Rosa, Kathryn Newton as Firecracker, Teo Briones as Timb, Tyler Dean Flores as Pondsy, Katie Rich as Officer Shanks and Nat Faxon as Officer Webb.
Behind the scenes, Sean Tretta and Borja Peña Gorostegui are writing and executive producing. Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee and Gabby Grantham are producing through Point Grey Pictures. Original series creator Tad Stones is consulting during development.
The order comes nearly six years after the reboot first entered development. The original Darkwing Duck ran for three seasons and 91 episodes from 1991 to 1992, with Jim Cummings voicing Darkwing, Christine Cavanaugh as Gosalyn and Terry McGovern as Launchpad. Darkwing and Gosalyn also appeared in the DuckTales reboot, where Darkwing started as a fictional television hero before Drake Mallard took on the role himself.
Stones has said the new team has increased both the action and the comedy while keeping the Disney heart of the series. Until the reboot gets a premiere date, the original Darkwing Duck is already available on Disney+.
