Marvel’s X-Men Movie Sets May 2028 Release at D23, With First MCU Cast Revealed
Marvel confirmed its X-Men movie for May 5, 2028 at D23 and unveiled the first cast, including Cyclops, Rogue, Storm and Mr. Sinister.
Marvel gave Disney fans a major X-Men update at D23, confirming when the MCU film will arrive and who is joining the first announced lineup. The presentation put several key mutant roles on the board, while also making clear more casting is still to come.
During Friday’s Disney Entertainment Showcase at D23, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that X-Men will open in theaters on May 5, 2028. The announcement came at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Disney’s biennial expo at the Anaheim Convention Center, which runs from Friday to Sunday and highlights upcoming movies, shows, experiences, products and company history.
Feige also unveiled the movie’s first announced mutants. Kit Connor will play Cyclops, Inde Navarrette will play Rogue, Christopher Abbott will play Professor Xavier, Samara Weaving will play Emma Frost, Maya Boyd will play Storm and Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey.
Adam Driver appeared in a video message to reveal that he will play Nathaniel Milbury, the villain better known as Mr. Sinister. In Marvel comics, Sinister is a geneticist whose story stretches back to the 19th century. He becomes obsessed with Cyclops and Jean because he believes their DNA could be used to create the ultimate mutant.
Feige said the cast announced at D23 is not the full lineup, signaling that more heroes, villains or supporting players could still be added. Wolverine was not confirmed.
The film will be directed by Jake Schreier, who previously directed 2025’s Thunderbolts*. The movie news also follows the end of season 2 for X-Men ’97 on Disney+. Brad Winderbaum has said Marvel is planning for season 3 of the animated series to premiere in 2027, with season 4 targeted for 2028.
