Disney’s Polynesian Costume Update Has One Missing Option Fans May Notice

Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort is rolling out new cast costumes, and the skirt option introduced under 2021 rules is gone.

A costume change at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort is doing more than refreshing the look of hotel cast members. The new outfits remove the skirt option that had been available to cast members of any gender under Disney’s updated appearance rules.

What changed at the Polynesian

Cast members across Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort have started changing into new uniforms, with the rollout beginning on Sunday, October 25. The update affects workers around the Deluxe Walt Disney World hotel, and the new costume setup replaces the previous choice between skirts and pants with a pants-only look.

The revised costumes pair colorful short-sleeve button-up shirts with khaki pants. The shirt pattern changes by role and location, including areas such as merchandise, the Front Desk, and Concierge. Before this update, cast members at the resort wore floral-print tops and could choose either pants or skirts.

Walt Disney World Resort had not commented on the change. Employees indicated that the new costumes will be introduced resort-wide over the coming weeks. As of Monday, cast members at Capt. Cook’s Quick-Service dining location were still wearing the Moana (2016)-inspired costumes first introduced in 2021.

Why the missing skirt stands out

The change is notable because Disney’s 2021 overhaul of the Disney Look was its biggest in years. That update loosened several appearance rules, allowing some unnatural hair colors, certain visible tattoos and piercings, and more flexibility with jewelry and nail art.

It also removed gender-specific language from the policy. Hair, nail polish, and grooming standards now apply to all cast members, and employees can wear any costume combination offered at their location. Before that change, cast members who presented as male could not wear the dresses and skirts available to female-presenting colleagues.

At the Polynesian, that broader costume flexibility now appears narrower than it was. For cast members at this resort, the practical effect is simple: as the new uniforms take over, the skirt choice that had been part of the location’s costume options since 2021 is no longer included.
