AITA for Calling Doctors Penguins at Work?

AITA asks if using "inappropriate language" at work was justified; read about a lighthearted comment causing drama and reactions from coworkers.

Calling doctors penguins at work sounds like a goofy one-liner, until it turns into a supervisor meeting and suddenly you’re wondering if you crossed some invisible line. In this Reddit post, OP thought they were smoothing over an awkward hallway moment, but it ended with someone getting offended and OP being pulled into the office.

The scene is painfully specific: OP is trying to walk through a hallway of doctors who are huddled in a circle, blocking the path while they talk tightly together. No emergency code, no chaos, just a bunch of people taking up space. OP, trying to lighten the mood, says something like, “You guys are huddled like penguins,” smiling and keeping it soft, because OP has a habit of comparing things to animals.

But the laughter turned into a complaint, and now OP is stuck asking if the “penguins” joke was harmless or if they somehow became the problem.

Original Post

Good evening,

I’m going to keep this post as hidden with any information that can reveal my job or location because this can come back to me. Today I got called into my supervisor's office to talk about a few things, and here is the part where I need some sort of reassurance and maybe to be told I’m not crazy about this?

The situation was I was trying to move through a hallway of doctors. I don’t know if anyone works at a hospital, but it’s pretty irritating when they all huddle in a circle blocking the hallway and they look at you crazy as if you’re wrong for saying I need to get through. But in this situation, it was kind of awkward. I was passing by with a basket that was full tight with things and they were all huddled in talking tightly together. Yes, I have common sense; they weren’t in an emergency situation with a code or attack or anything. I literally said in kind of a way to break the awkwardness of things like “you guys are huddled like penguins (with a big smile and in a soft tone) do you mind if I pass by.” Also really quick for anyone that questions that comment, a lot of people know I like animals and I always compare things to them.

But they all were laughing like legitimately! But I guess someone got offended, which I was told by my supervisor, and they had to talk to me.

Which I find insane because none of them know my name and what position I’m in, so someone really must’ve been so upset they tracked me? So what I’m getting at is am I right to think that person took it very wrongly.

And was me stating you guys are stacked like penguins a joke to ease an awkward situation? My supervisor even said people in the hospital I’m working at are sensitive and I’m guessing why a lot of people quit.

But are they overreacting or am I just insensitive and an a*****e?

This hallway drama has the same holiday heat as the family fight over refusing to share a modern twist on a traditional dish.

That penguin comparison was meant to break the tension as OP tried to squeeze past the doctors’ hallway huddle with a basket full of stuff.

The fact that the doctors were laughing, then someone still reported it, is what makes OP feel like they’re being targeted after the fact.

When OP’s supervisor says hospital people are “sensitive” and mentions people quitting, OP starts wondering if the offense was really about the joke or about who said it.

Now OP’s left with the wild thought that someone tracked them down even though nobody in that hallway circle knew their name.</p>

OP might have meant penguin humor, but it landed like a complaint that nobody asked for.
