AITA for Enabling Neglectful Pet Ownership? My Friend Keeps Dumping Her Husky on Me
AITA for repeatedly covering for my friend's neglect of her high-maintenance dog, torn between enabling her behavior and standing up for the pet's well-being?
A 28-year-old woman refused to keep saying yes to the same “just this once” Husky request, and honestly, it’s about time. Her friend, Sarah, has a high-maintenance husky named Luna, the kind of dog that needs real exercise, grooming, and attention, not last-minute favors and guilt trips.
Here’s the messy part: Sarah keeps dumping Luna on OP when work or trips pop up, often without making proper plans. OP loves Luna, but she also has her own life, and last week’s week-long dog-sitting turned into a reality check. Luna came back restless, overgrown, and clearly unhappy, like she’d been running on neglect and hope.
Now Sarah is back, asking again and again, acting like OP is her backup plan, and OP has to decide if she’s enabling neglect or finally drawing a line.

So I'm (28F) and I have this friend (26F), let's call her Sarah. Sarah has a cute but high-maintenance Husky named Luna.
Now, Luna needs a lot of exercise, grooming, and attention, which Sarah knew when she got her. However, Sarah often neglects Luna because of her busy schedule.
She frequently asks me to dog-sit last minute or cover for her when she goes out of town without planning for Luna's care. For background, I love Luna, but I have my own responsibilities and can't always drop everything to care for her.
Last week, Sarah had a sudden work trip and asked me to watch Luna for a whole week. I hesitated but agreed since she seemed desperate.
During that time, I realized how much Sarah neglects Luna's needs. Luna was overgrown, restless, and clearly unhappy.
I ended up giving Luna a proper grooming session, exercise, and attention she craved, making me feel like I'm covering for Sarah's irresponsibility. Now, Sarah's back and keeps asking me to watch Luna frequently, assuming I'll always say yes.
I want to confront her about neglecting Luna's needs and expecting me to pick up the slack. However, I don't want to strain our friendship.
I feel torn between enabling Sarah's behavior by caring for Luna or standing up for the dog's well-being. So AITA?

It’s the same kind of backlash as the neighbor who got angry after refusing cat-sitting for neglectful care.

OP thought she was helping during Sarah’s sudden work trip, but the “desperate” request turned into a pattern fast.
After OP gave Luna a real grooming and exercise reset, the dog’s condition made Sarah’s neglect impossible to ignore.
The worst part is Sarah’s attitude when she returns, she doesn’t even ask, she just assumes OP will cover for her again.
That’s why OP is stuck between confronting Sarah about Luna’s needs and protecting a friendship that keeps getting stretched thin.
What do you think about this situation? Let us know in the comments.
OP isn’t the emergency shelter for Luna’s neglect, and Sarah needs to stop treating her like one.
