AITA for questioning my daughters passion for art and causing family discord?
AITA for questioning my daughter's career choice, causing a family feud over practicality vs. passion?
A 47-year-old dad thought he was being helpful when his daughter announced she wanted to paint for a living. Instead, one family dinner turned into a full-on emotional fallout, and now he is wondering if he crossed a line he did not even realize he was stepping over.
Sarah, 21, has been chasing art since forever, and he has shown up to exhibitions and cheered her on. But when it came time to talk career, he pushed back hard, suggesting she add business or marketing so she would not end up “starving.” Then a relative tossed out that exact phrase at a gathering, and he repeated his doubts, right in front of everyone.
Now Sarah is refusing to speak to him, and the rest of the family is split, so it becomes a question of intent versus impact.
Original Post
I (47M) have a daughter, Sarah (21F), who has always been passionate about art. For as long as I can remember, she's dreamed of becoming a professional painter.
I've supported her artistic endeavors, attending her exhibitions, and praising her creativity. However, when it came to her career choice, I initially had reservations.
I come from a family of doctors and engineers, and I've always believed in stable, traditional professions. So, when Sarah announced her decision to pursue a full-time career in art, I was concerned about her financial future.
I expressed my worries, suggesting she consider a minor in business or marketing to enhance her prospects. Despite my advice, Sarah remained resolute in her choice.
She argued that true success lies in following one's passion, not chasing a paycheck. While I admire her determination, I can't shake off my concerns about the practicality of an art career.
Recently, during a family gathering, the topic of Sarah's career came up. One relative made a snide comment about 'starving artists,' which reignited my fears about Sarah's future.
I let slip my lingering doubts, suggesting again that she reconsider her career path. Sarah was hurt and stormed off, refusing to speak to me since.
I never meant to upset her, only to offer what I believed was sound advice. But now, the tension between us is palpable, and the rest of the family is divided.
So, AITA?

The whole thing starts with Sarah’s dream, and OP’s decision to “manage risk” instead of just celebrating the plan.
A relationship expert pointed out that questioning a child's choices can lead to feelings of inadequacy and resentment.

The tension spikes when that relative at the family gathering brings up “starving artists,” and OP immediately echoes his earlier worries.
On the same “career pressure” vibe as someone going head-to-head with a long-time coworker for a promotion.
Research shows that when parents express genuine interest, it fosters a safe space for children to share their dreams and concerns. This method helps parents understand the motivations behind their child's choices while allowing young adults to feel heard and validated.

Sarah gets hurt, storms off, and suddenly OP is not just worried about finances, he is worried about his relationship.
For example, part-time jobs or freelance opportunities can provide financial stability while allowing creative exploration.
Additionally, developing a portfolio and networking within the art community can enhance job prospects.

By the time the dinner is over, the family is taking sides, and OP has to live with the fact that his “advice” landed like an insult.

In navigating the delicate balance between supporting a child's passion and addressing practical concerns, effective communication is paramount.
This scenario encapsulates the perennial struggle between a parent's protective instincts and a child's yearning for independence.
He might have meant well, but at that dinner he basically told Sarah her passion was a bad investment, and now she wants nothing to do with him.
