AITA for Refusing Fiances Unplanned Puppy Purchase?

AITA for refusing to adopt a puppy my fiance brought home without asking? Discussions and plans about getting a pet were ignored, leading to a heated argument.

A 28-year-old man refused to take part in a surprise puppy situation, and now his fiancée is staying with her parents for the week. The whole thing started as a normal day home from work, except when he walked in and saw a tiny, adorable puppy where they had planned to bring home an adult shelter dog.

Here’s the messy part, they had been talking about getting a pet for months. They even agreed on the plan, adopt together later, and choose an older dog because it would fit their hectic schedules and smaller apartment. Then his fiancée showed up with a puppy from a breeder, all excitement and no conversation, and he immediately pushed back.

Now he’s stuck wondering if refusing the puppy makes him the villain, or if she really did blindside him.

So I'm (28M) and my fiance (26F) recently had a huge disagreement over a puppy. For months, we've been discussing getting a pet, looking at adult dogs from shelters due to our work schedules.

We even agreed that we would decide together and adopt when the time is right. One day, I come home after a long day at work to find my fiance with a puppy.

She looks overjoyed, showing me this adorable little creature she got from a breeder. I was shocked as we discussed adopting an older dog for many reasons like being house-trained and less hyperactive.

I was taken aback that she made this decision without my input, especially when we had already agreed on the type of pet and the process of adopting. I calmly told her that I didn't think it was the right time for us to have a puppy and that we should stick to our original plan of adopting an older dog.

She got upset, saying she fell in love with this puppy and that I should just accept it. Our apartment is small, and our work schedules are demanding.

I don't think it's fair to bring a puppy into this situation without considering our discussions and plans. We ended up in a heated argument, with her accusing me of being heartless and uncaring about her feelings.

She's now staying with her parents for the week with the puppy. I feel like she blindsided me with this decision, and I don't think I should have to accept a responsibility we weren't ready for just because she made an impulsive choice.

So AITA?

This situation is similar to the fight with your partner’s sibling over a surprise pet adoption, when everyone’s input got ignored.

When he came home from work and saw the breeder puppy instead of the older shelter dog they’d discussed, his shock turned into a full argument fast.

The moment he brought up their small apartment and demanding work schedules, his fiancée snapped back that she “fell in love” and he needed to accept it.

After she accused him of being heartless for not instantly loving the puppy, she packed up and moved in with her parents for the week.

With the apartment now quiet and his fiancée gone, he’s left thinking she made an impulsive decision and he shouldn’t have to carry the fallout.

He might not be heartless, but he’s definitely trying to stop a puppy from turning their whole relationship into chaos.
