AITA for relocating stinky cat litterbox to roommates room?

"Roommate tension boils over as stinky litterbox leads to drastic action - moving it into roommate's room sparks debate on responsibilities."

Some roommate drama is loud, some is passive-aggressive, and some comes in the form of a cat litterbox that somehow turns your hallway into a biohazard zone. In this post, OP says the smell has been so bad it has basically taken over the building’s shared space.

The complication? OP and their flatmate already have a rocky history. They’ve argued before, and OP claims their roommate gets defensive and makes excuses, even after OP asked if the litterbox was cleaned. OP says the smell is still there, and they’re dealing with health fallout too, like itchy, watery eyes.

So OP made a move, literally, and relocated the litterbox into their roommate’s room, and now everyone is weighing in on whether that was justified or just gasoline on an already tense situation.

Original Post

I dont have a very good relationship with my flatmate. I have had arguments with her before and she gets defensive or makes excuses and its frustrating.

Over the past few days the litterbox has completely stunk out our hall. I can no longer stand it so I had to.move it.

(I asked her if she had cleaned it, and she said she had but the smell is still there meaning i dont think its been cleaned properly) My sister says it will cause frustration between us, but im willing to converse with her about it. The reason I haven't is because I dont think she'll take it well.

An unclean litterbox can cause health issues like for me, I think it caused my eyes to become itchy and watery for a while. Any advice on how to go about the conversation?

This is similar to the AITA where someone wanted the current tenant out after inheriting a house, even with a deal offered.

OP tried to handle it by asking their flatmate if she cleaned the box, but the defensive excuses made it feel like nothing actually changed.

While the smell kept clinging to the hall, OP’s sister warned that relocating it would spark frustration, and OP still went ahead.

The real kicker is that OP says the stink wasn’t just annoying, it triggered itchy, watery eyes, so this wasn’t about being “picky.”

Now the question hanging over the whole story is whether OP and their flatmate can talk it out after the litterbox ended up in her room.

OP might be protecting their health, but they’re about to find out if moving the litterbox was worth the fight it starts.
