AITA for Surprising My Meat-Loving Family with a Vegan Christmas Dinner?

AITA for surprising my meat-loving family with a vegan Christmas dinner? Opinions are divided on whether I should have warned them beforehand.

A 28-year-old woman tried to turn Christmas dinner into a vegan holiday, and it did not go the way she pictured. She didn’t just bring a side dish, she took over the whole menu, swapping out every meat option her family expects to see on the table.

Her parents’ house is basically a meat-and-potatoes tradition, with everyone treating animal products like the main event. After a year on a vegan diet for ethical and health reasons, she decided to surprise them with a fully plant-based Christmas, no turkey, no ham, nothing. The moment everyone realized there was no “real” dish, the vibe soured fast, including her dad opting out entirely.

Now she’s stuck wondering if her intentions mattered more than the tradition she broke.

I (28F) come from a family that absolutely loves meat. They're the type who think a meal isn't complete without some kind of animal product in it.

For background, I made the switch to a vegan diet a year ago due to ethical reasons and health benefits. Every Christmas, we have a big family dinner at my parents' house.

This year, I offered to take charge of the meal planning and cooking. I decided to surprise everyone by making the entire Christmas dinner plant-based.

No turkey, ham, or any meat dishes in sight. I spent days perfecting the recipes to ensure they were flavorful and satisfying.

On Christmas day, as my family gathered around the table, I proudly presented the vegan feast I had prepared. At first, there was confusion and disbelief.

They kept looking around, expecting to see a traditional meat dish somewhere. When they realized that everything on the table was vegan, the mood shifted.

Some of them made snarky comments about missing out on their favorite meats. My dad even refused to touch anything and opted for a sandwich instead.

It was awkward and tense throughout the meal. After dinner, my sister pulled me aside and told me that I should have warned them beforehand about the vegan menu.

She said some of them felt disappointed and betrayed that I didn't consider their preferences. She mentioned that Christmas dinner was a tradition for them and I had disrupted it.

Now, I'm left feeling conflicted. I wanted to share something important to me with my family, but I didn't anticipate such a negative reaction.

So, Reddit, amidst the disappointment and tension, AITA?

She spent days perfecting a vegan feast, but the second she set it down, her family started scanning the table like something was missing.

When her dad refused to touch anything and ate a sandwich instead, the surprise stopped feeling cute and started feeling personal.

After the awkward dinner, her sister pulled her aside and basically accused her of springing a betrayal on everyone.

So now OP is stuck replaying the moment her family expected turkey and got a fully plant-based spread instead.
