Am I Wrong for Not Allowing My Friends Pet Snake on Our Road Trip Due to My Fear?
"OP faces dilemma when refusing friend's pet snake on road trip due to phobia - AITA for setting boundaries? Reddit weighs in."
A 28-year-old woman refused to let her friend’s pet snake join them on a cross-country road trip, and now the friendship is stuck in a tense, icy standoff. It sounds dramatic, sure, but it’s also painfully specific: this isn’t about “not liking snakes” in theory, it’s about fear that goes straight to the gut.
OP and Maya planned a national-park adventure, but Maya recently acquired a snake and insists it can come along everywhere. OP has a severe snake phobia from a childhood incident, so even the idea of the snake being nearby during long drives and park stops feels like a nightmare. Maya calls OP unreasonable and overly dramatic, OP calls it a real boundary, and the argument ends with Maya giving the cold shoulder.
Now OP is wondering if she ruined the trip by drawing a line she couldn’t cross.

I (28F) and my friend Maya (27F) planned a road trip across the country to visit various national parks. Maya recently acquired a pet snake, which she adores and takes everywhere.
Now, I have a severe fear of snakes that stems from a childhood incident.
She insisted that her snake is well-behaved and won't bother me, but just the idea of it being in close proximity terrifies me. We got into a heated argument, with Maya accusing me of being unreasonable and overly dramatic.
I stood my ground, saying I can't help my fear and it's a boundary for me. Maya eventually relented but has been giving me the cold shoulder ever since.
She claims I'm being unfair by not accommodating her and excluding her pet from our adventure. I understand her love for her snake, but my fear is genuine.
I feel awful for potentially ruining our trip, but my phobia feels insurmountable in this situation. AITA?

This is similar to a roommate who wanted a pet snake, and the objecting housemate.

That childhood incident is the whole reason OP can’t just “deal with it” when Maya shows up excited about her snake for the road trip.
Once Maya insists the snake is well-behaved and won’t bother OP, the argument shifts from logistics to whether OP’s fear even counts.
Even after Maya relents, the cold shoulder starts, and OP realizes the drama did not end when the snake got sidelined.
Now Maya is framing it as exclusion, while OP is stuck feeling like she’s the villain for protecting herself during every park stop and long drive.
How would you handle this situation? Let us know in the comments.
Maya may want the snake on the adventure, but OP’s fear already decided the route.
