Am I Wrong for Not Baking a Valentines Day Cake for My Partner?

AITA for not baking my partner a Valentine's Day cake despite her hints and expectations, leading to tension and disagreement on the special occasion?

A 28-year-old man didn’t bake a Valentine’s Day cake for his girlfriend, and it turned into a whole relationship side quest. The twist is, his partner is the kind of dessert person who treats special occasions like an excuse to go all out, especially when it comes to cakes.

For weeks, she dropped hints about the exact flavors and decorations she wanted, then assumed he’d be the one surprising her when Valentine’s Day arrived. But he knew he didn’t have the time or confidence to pull off something elaborate, so he told her the truth and suggested buying a cake instead.

She ended up baking her own, and the tension didn’t magically disappear, now he’s stuck wondering if he messed up.

Original Post

I (28M) have been with my partner (26F) for three years now. She absolutely loves desserts, especially cakes, and always looks forward to special occasions like Valentine's Day to indulge in sweet treats.

For background, I've never been much of a baker and have always struggled in the kitchen compared to her culinary skills. This year, she hinted multiple times about wanting a homemade Valentine's Day cake and dropping not-so-subtle suggestions about flavors and decorations she loves.

However, with work and personal commitments, I knew I wouldn't have the time or expertise to create the elaborate cake she desired. As Valentine's Day approached, she excitedly asked if I had started baking the cake, assuming I would surprise her with it.

I hesitated and eventually confessed that I didn't feel comfortable attempting such a complicated baking task and suggested we buy a cake instead. She was visibly disappointed and questioned why I couldn't put in the effort for a special day like Valentine's Day.

This led to a bit of a disagreement as she felt I didn't appreciate her interests and wasn't willing to step out of my comfort zone for her happiness. I tried to explain that I value her preferences, but baking a cake of her standard was beyond my abilities.

She ended up baking her own cake, and though she said she understood, there was an underlying tension throughout the day. Now, I'm unsure if I made the right choice by refusing to bake the cake.

So, AITA?

When his partner kept hinting about flavors and decorations, it sounded sweet in theory, but it also set him up for a high-pressure bake-off he never agreed to.

The moment he confessed he wasn’t comfortable attempting her “standard” cake and offered to buy one, the disappointment hit fast.

After she felt like he wasn’t stepping out of his comfort zone for her happiness, the Valentine’s Day vibe turned sour in real time.

By the time she baked her own cake, the underlying tension from their disagreement was still hanging around, and he’s now questioning his choice.

He might not have been wrong for skipping the bake, but he definitely picked the kind of Valentine’s Day that comes with receipts.
