Disney Cruise Line Japan names its first ship Disney Imagination, with Ariel on the stern
Disney Imagination will launch Disney Cruise Line Japan from Tokyo in spring 2029, with Ariel on the stern and about 30 dining venues.
Disney Cruise Line’s first ship based in Japan now has an official name. Oriental Land Co. and Oriental Land Cruise Company have unveiled Disney Imagination, the vessel that will launch Disney Cruise Line Japan from Tokyo in spring 2029.
What changed, and when it starts
The newly named Disney Imagination will be the first ship in Disney Cruise Line Japan, a Disney branded cruise business operated by Oriental Land Co., the company that runs Tokyo Disney Resort under license from Disney.
The ship is scheduled to begin sailing in spring 2029 from Tokyo, with the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal set to serve as its main homeport. The vessel uses the Wish class as its base design, with select changes for Japanese guests.
Disney and OLC have framed the name around imagination as a core part of Disney storytelling. Disney has described the ship as being powered by creativity and optimism, while OLC said the name reflects a hope that guests across generations will feel Disney’s imagination while sailing.

Why fans may be looking twice at the stern
Like other Disney Cruise Line ships, Disney Imagination will feature a character on the stern. For this ship, Ariel from The Little Mermaid will appear with Sebastian and friends from under the sea. Ariel is shown using her dinglehopper to write the ship’s name.
That reveal also gives a clearer picture of the ship’s overall tone. Guests can expect Disney storytelling throughout the vessel, Broadway style entertainment created for Disney Cruise Line, and chances to meet Disney characters. OLC said those characters will appear in cruise specific costumes.
More onboard details have also been outlined. The ship’s theater is set to hold more than 1,300 guests for original stage shows, and an outdoor deck stage will host character shows. Dining plans include three main restaurants, each with its own theme and menu, plus cafes and bars that bring the total number of food and beverage locations to about 30. Shops will carry merchandise made for Disney Imagination.
Family spaces are also part of the lineup, including areas for kids, tweens, and teens, along with adults only spaces designed for relaxation. OLC earnings materials have also listed the ship at about 140,000 gross tons with roughly 1,250 guest rooms, and itineraries of two to four nights.
For Disney fans in Japan, the biggest takeaway is simple: the market’s first Disney branded ship now has a name, a launch window, and a signature stern figure to match.
