Parents In Disarray After Aunt Sneakily Gives Baby Cinnamon Buns Despite Known Allergy

The parents said no, but this aunt felt she knew better.

Parents of children with severe allergies often learn quickly that vigilance becomes part of daily life.

One mother says that’s exactly what life looks like for her 10-month-old son. He has a serious non-IgE mediated allergy to corn and corn derivatives.

When he consumes it, the reaction isn’t mild. It triggers painful gas, severe eczema across his body, and even blood and mucus in his stool. The symptoms can last for about 72 hours.

Because of that, she carefully researches and prepares every single meal he eats.

Recently, her husband took their two children, a four-year-old daughter and the baby, to stay overnight at his family’s dairy farm while she had commitments in town. Before they left, she packed all of the baby’s food herself to make sure he wouldn’t accidentally eat anything unsafe.

The farm has several homes on the property. Her husband’s aunt and uncle live in one house, while his grandparents live in another nearby.

After breakfast at the aunt’s house, the baby started getting fussy and needed a bottle. Her husband realized the clean bottles were drying at the grandparents’ house about 300 meters away. He ran over to grab one and was gone for less than three minutes.

When he came back, his aunt proudly told him the baby had loved her homemade cinnamon buns.

The problem is that those buns almost certainly contained ingredients the baby cannot safely eat.

Now, 24 hours later, the baby is suffering through a painful allergic reaction. In addition, the mother is wondering if confronting the aunt in a strong way would go too far.

After hearing what happened, it’s easy to understand why this mother is furious. Her baby is now dealing with days of painful symptoms, all because someone ignored a rule that had already been explained many times.

When a child has severe allergies, feeding them without asking isn’t a small mistake. It can have real consequences.

At the same time, we understand her hesitance to call out a family member in a strong way.

How would you have handled this situation if you were in this mother’s shoes?
