Grandmother Takes 10-Month-Old To Pumpkin Patch While Babysitting, Gets Accused Of Stealing Baby’s First Experience From Mom

The pumpkin patch trip that cost a grandmother her babysitting privileges

A grandmother (OP) recently posted about an unexpected fallout from what she thought was a simple babysitting activity.

OP explained that she was watching her 10-month-old granddaughter for the week while her daughter was out of town.

Her older grandkids had the day off from school, so she made plans to take them to the pumpkin patch to paint pumpkins.

She brought the baby along, they all had a great time, and she innocently posted pictures in the family group chat.

To OP’s surprise, her daughter was furious. She accused OP of taking away her baby’s first pumpkin patch experience, which she can never get back now.

She couldn’t believe OP would do such an activity without taking permission from her first. In addition, she accused OP of trying to pretend the baby is hers.

Unfortunately, after expressing her disgust, she made it clear to OP that it will be a long time before she watches her daughter again, if ever.

OP admits she’s known for acting without thinking, but this time she genuinely doesn’t understand what she did wrong. From her point of view, it was just a fun activity to keep the kids entertained.

OP explained that at her age, she tries to get the kids out of the house when she can because keeping them occupied isn’t easy.

Plus, the baby is 10 months old and won’t even remember this. So her daughter and grandchild can still have their own first pumpkin patch trip together.

But her daughter sees it differently, and now the relationship is strained.

OP saw this as a practical babysitting decision while watching multiple kids for a week.

But unfortunately, the daughter saw it as crossing a line by experiencing a milestone moment without her.

The baby won’t remember the pumpkin patch at all, but OP’s daughter will always remember not being there for it.

Some parents want control over their child’s first experiences regardless of memory. Others, like OP, believe practical childcare decisions take priority during babysitting arrangements.

The disagreement has real consequences either way, with babysitting privileges now on the line and the relationship strained over what happened.
