I (26F) have been dating my boyfriend (28M) for just over a year. He’s kind, funny, and honestly one of the most emotionally available men I’ve met, which is why this is so hard.
He has a golden retriever named Max, whom he rescued five years ago. Max is his world.
At first, I thought it was sweet. I love animals, but I also live in a small one-bedroom apartment in the city, and I keep it very clean.

Max is large, hyper, sheds everywhere, and has no sense of boundaries. But I tolerated it because I cared about my boyfriend.
Last weekend, while my boyfriend was in the shower, Max somehow got into my bedroom where I’d placed a wooden jewelry box that belonged to my late grandmother. It was over 73 years old.
Max knocked it off the dresser, chewed through one of the drawers, and cracked the mirror inside. I was devastated.

When I told my boyfriend what happened, he looked genuinely sorry for about five seconds. Then he became defensive and said it wasn’t Max’s fault and that I shouldn’t have “left something so special within reach.” I was speechless.
