Nurse Breaks Up With Her Boyfriend Publicly At The Airport After His Mom Bought Everyone First Class Tickets Except For Her
The boarding agent during that flight saved OP from her boyfriend and his awful family.
A lot of factors can make or break a relationship, and the ultimate decision to part ways may not always be limited to just the couple. Believe it or not, your family and your significant other's family can factor into the equation.
When you date, especially in a long-term relationship, it's expected that you meet each other's families. These meetings don't always go as planned, and for some reason, you just can't get along with your significant other's brood.
It's better to figure out where you stand with them early on in the relationship instead of having that drama aired out in a very public setting, which is what happened to this Reddit user. OP (original poster) knows that her boyfriend's mom has disliked her from the start.
The mom, Becky, always makes snide comments about OP's parents and their blue-collar jobs. OP is a nurse, and even that is not good enough for Becky.
Now, Becky planned a vacation to Cabo for the family and her children's partners. She paid for everyone's airfare for the spring vacation.
When they got to the airport, OP saw that Becky and the seven other family members would be flying first class while OP received a ticket for a coach seat. Becky told OP that she was used to that anyway and that OP should be grateful for just being included.
The family all went to the express check-in while OP was stuck in the long line of coach passengers, wondering what was happening. She was trying her best to hold back her tears until she reached the counter.
The ground staff informed her that she had to pay for her baggage while Becky smirked as she looked at OP about to pay the baggage fee. Where was OP's boyfriend while all of this was going on?
Well, he never even attempted to speak up for OP or at least ask if she was okay. OP couldn't hold back her tears anymore and cried while she was talking to the attendant.
The check-in attendant told OP that she shouldn't go on the trip with her boyfriend's family because they obviously don't appreciate her.
OP couldn't stop crying, but she decided that the lady was right. So she took her baggage, with the help of the lady, got out of the long line, and made a beeline for her boyfriend.
She told him in front of everyone within earshot how badly she had been treated and how awful his mom had been to her. She broke up with him on the spot, which rightfully embarrassed his mother.
Ever since that dramatic but inevitable breakup, OP's ex has been trying to contact her to ask how she could do that to him and his mom. He's also trying to guilt OP by saying that she wasted everyone's time and money when she backed out of the trip at the last minute.
NoTGoingThankYou can decide if OP's the real a**hole in this situation or not after you read her whole post below:

"I started crying on my boyfriend in the airport."

Becky was lording her money over OP. If OP didn't break up with her ex, Becky would have looked down on OP throughout the entire relationship.

Don't waste time trying to be civil to people who are determined to insult you.

With all their money, yet they still can't buy breeding and a spine.
Able-Dress1678
The ex's barometer for normal and acceptable behavior is skewed thanks to his mom.

Don't forget the real enemy, Katniss.

If OP stayed with the ex long enough, she eventually would have thought she deserved that kind of treatment.
Sunshine_15
Thanks to the helpful check-in lady, OP doesn't have to suffer through that.

It takes a lot of guts to stand up for total strangers like that. It wasn't a part of her job by any means, but she stood up for OP.

The rest of the significant others in that family should honestly reflect on their choices before it's too late.

Judging by how they just went along with Becky's plan, it's actually pretty obvious they're fine with it.

I guess we should thank them for staying with each other and keeping their unacceptable behavior contained.

Someone pointed out that Becky technically didn't spend any money on OP's FREE ticket.
mumismatist
OP made the best possible choice by breaking up with her boyfriend after his cowardice.
mumismatist
Becky sounds like a person who would describe others she deems beneath her as "riff-raff."
WillLoveCoffee4Ever1
She embarrassed herself without any help from OP, and OP shouldn't feel guilty at all.

They didn't teach courtesy in fancy schools.

It's not always easy to stand up for yourself, especially when you're alone. In OP's case, everyone, including her boyfriend, was acting as if Becky's treatment of her was perfectly fine, making OP think she was probably just being sensitive.
It took a complete stranger, who could have just ignored the situation and kept on working, for OP to realize how horrible Becky really was. OP should walk away cleanly from her ex's family without any guilt because she did nothing wrong to deserve that kind of treatment.
