Cats Anxiety Leads to Friends Bird Missing Vet Appointment: AITA?

AITA for prioritizing my cat's anxiety over a friend's bird needing a vet visit, leading to a heated situation and guilt?

A 28-year-old woman refused to drive her friend’s cockatiel to the vet, and it immediately turned into a full-on guilt spiral. The reason? Her anxiety-prone cat, Whiskers, cannot handle car rides, and the second the travel cage went in the car, everything went sideways.

Emma, her friend, said her car broke down and she had no other way to get Sunny to the appointment she’d been planning. OP agreed anyway, even though Whiskers is known to hiss, pace, and even vomit when the car starts. But when Emma and Sunny got in, Whiskers escalated fast, and OP pulled over and ended the trip.

Now Emma claims OP ruined Sunny’s vet visit and wants OP to pay for a taxi. Here’s the full story.

So I'm (28F) in a bit of a pickle, and I need some outside perspective on this. Quick context: I have a lovely but anxiety-prone cat named Whiskers who gets really stressed during car rides.

My friend, let's call her Emma, recently asked me for a ride to a vet appointment with her cockatiel, Sunny, who she's had for years and adores. Emma said her car broke down, and she had no other way to get Sunny to the vet.

When she asked for a ride, I hesitated because of Whiskers' car anxiety. Nevertheless, I reluctantly agreed to help out.

On the day of the appointment, as soon as Emma got into the car with Sunny in the travel cage, Whiskers started hissing, pacing, and even vomited out of stress. I felt terrible seeing my cat so distressed.

So, I made the difficult decision to pull over and explain to Emma that I couldn't continue the ride due to Whiskers' reaction. Emma got upset, claiming I should have warned her earlier about my cat's sensitivity to car rides.

She accused me of being inconsiderate and causing Sunny to miss the vet appointment. Now Emma is insisting I pay for a taxi for her and Sunny.

I'm torn and feeling guilty about the situation. So AITA?

It’s a lot like the AITA fight over letting a friend bring her beloved fish on a road trip, despite the mess it caused.

The second Emma buckled Sunny into the travel cage, Whiskers started hissing and pacing like the car was a horror movie.

OP felt guilty, but she still pulled over when Whiskers vomited from pure car stress.

Emma got mad and said OP should have warned her sooner about Whiskers’ reaction to rides she already knew would happen.

Now Emma is demanding OP pay for a taxi for Sunny, and the comments are about to pick a side fast.

OP might not be the villain here, but Emma sure is acting like Whiskers got the vet appointment canceled on purpose.

Wait till you see why the vacation rental refused Emma’s aggressive cat, and what happened next.
