TikToker Gets A Message To Do A DNA Test, And It Changes Her Life Completely

“About a year ago, on Jan. 9, I received a text message telling me to get a DNA test from Ancestry."

A 28-year-old woman refused to ignore a weird text message, and it ended up flipping her whole family story upside down. Lane thought it was a scam at first, then watched the conversation keep going like the sender knew exactly what he was doing.

On Jan. 9, she got a message telling her to take a DNA test from Ancestry. She already did 23andMe, hoping for some fun “secretly exotic” reveal, but the real twist was that the texter would not prove who he was, and the whole thing got messy fast when a disposable Facebook profile tried to reach her and her husband too.

Then Lane called her mom, and that’s when the text message turned into something way more personal.

Lane’s first reaction was pure disbelief, especially since she had already done 23andMe and expected nothing more than “English and Irish,” not a life-altering mystery.

“About a year ago, on Jan. 9, I received a text message telling me to get a DNA test from Ancestry. I thought it was fake, so I FaceTimed my friend and said, ‘Listen to this.’ She replied, ‘I swear my gut is telling me this is real. You need to respond.’ So I responded, and then they wrote me back,” she continues.“I was shocked that they responded,” Lane adds, showing another part of the text conversation. “I let them know I had already done 23andMe the year before because it was on sale. I was hoping to find out that I was secretly exotic or related to royalty, but I’m just English and Irish, like I thought I was.”

After Lane’s mom heard the “What the f*ck?” call, she dropped the bomb that she had an affair when Lane was in college, including the detail about the younger guy asking, “Is that mine?”

“They would not provide me with any proof that this was real, and, obviously, I called my mom immediately, saying, ‘What the f*ck?’

Well, Lane's mom had some news for her.

“My mom always told me this story that she was an alcoholic and my dad was a cheater. So when I called her, she said, ‘I know exactly what you’re talking about; I had an affair.’ I almost fell off my f*cking chair,” Lane says in the video. ‘She had an affair with a guy ten years younger than her when she was in college. It was a one-time thing, but he even saw her on campus and asked, ‘Is that mine?’ and she denied it.”

It’s like the AITA situation where someone told their cousin’s parents about her pregnancy secret.

After hearing the story from her mother, Lane decided to get an Ancestry test done and waited for the results. Upon receiving them, she was delighted to discover that the man who had sent her a text message was indeed her father.

While Lane waited for the Ancestry results, the whole situation kept getting stranger, because the sender had been reaching out without any proof, yet kept coming back anyway.

“I found out that, yes, this man is my father. So I messaged him immediately, and he lives in California. He’s British. What the f*ck?He said my mom sent him a Christmas card when I was two years old, mentioning my name, and that he’s googled my name ever since. He followed me on social media my entire life. He watched me date my boyfriend, get married, have babies—everything, all from the outside, unable to know me.”

Lane created a follow-up video in which she discussed how her biological father had attempted to keep abreast of her life from a distance over the years.

When the results finally landed, Lane discovered the man who texted her was her father, and he explained he had been googling her name since a Christmas card from when she was two.

Lane found out that he had called her workplace to hear her voice and had wanted to get a haircut from her at the salon where she worked, though his wife had advised against it. This incident has negatively impacted her relationship with her mother.

“You can imagine a secret of this magnitude requires a lot of lying, betrayal, and manipulation to maintain for this long. Cutting my mom off was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I never would have expected it. We were like this [crossed fingers] growing up. I used to tell people she was my soulmate,” Lane says.

When Lane encountered her biological father, it didn't turn out to be exactly what she had envisioned. She felt "stupid" after they parted and noticed they weren't really making eye contact. However, some people suggested that this may have been due to cultural differences, either because he was British or simply not as expressive.

“Our interactions left me feeling very confused and invalidated. I was there for about five days. We met up once or twice a day to hang out and go out to eat, and every time I felt like I was prying information out of him. I just felt like he didn’t like me.”“I was A-OK until the last day, and then I got very emotional because I guess I was just hoping it would be different by then. When it wasn’t, it was just hard. So here I am back in New York, and yeah, I hope that our relationship continues to improve,” she says.

The family story didn’t just change, it rearranged everything Lane thought she knew about her own origins.
