Caught in a Cat-astrophe: AITA for Refusing to Adopt Pet Wife Got Without Consent?

AITA for refusing to adopt a pet with my wife after she secretly got a cat without my consent? The couple disagrees on the unilateral decision and its impact on their relationship.

A black cat walked into a local animal shelter and basically stole the whole scene, and now a 38-year-old husband is wondering if he handled it wrong. The problem is, the “surprise” wasn’t just a cute moment, it was an adoption decision his wife made without him.

OP and his wife, both working full-time, had agreed they would pick a pet together after visiting the shelter. OP says he’s more of a dog person, his wife is a cat person, and they planned to decide as a team. Then she fell for an adorable black cat, filled out the adoption papers solo, and brought it home like it was already settled business. OP was shocked, asked to return the cat, and now she’s giving him the silent treatment while bonding with the new little roommate.

Yep, this is a cat-astrophe, and it’s turning into a marriage test with whiskers.

So I'm (38M) and my wife (35F) have been discussing adopting a pet for a while now. We both work full-time jobs but felt ready for the responsibility of having a furry companion.

We decided to visit a local animal shelter to look at potential pets. For background, I've always been more of a dog person, while my wife loves cats.

We agreed that we would choose a pet together after meeting different animals. However, when we got to the shelter, my wife saw this adorable black cat and instantly fell in love with it.

She was so excited and wanted to adopt it on the spot. I told her that I wasn't ready to make a decision yet and wanted to explore our options.

But without consulting me further, my wife went ahead and filled out the adoption papers for the cat. I was taken aback by her unilateral decision and felt betrayed that she didn't include me in the process.

When we got home, she surprised me with the cat, expecting me to be happy. I was shocked and felt like my opinion didn't matter.

I expressed my disappointment in her not considering my feelings and making such a big decision on her own. I told her that I wasn't comfortable with the situation and that we should return the cat.

She got upset, saying I was overreacting and being unreasonable. Now, she's giving me the silent treatment and spending all her time with the cat, making me feel left out.

So AITA for standing my ground and refusing to adopt the cat my wife got without my consent?

This is similar to the AITA where one partner adopted a dog without approval and sparked relationship tension.

Right after OP told her he wasn’t ready to decide and wanted to look around, she filled out the adoption papers anyway and surprised him with the cat at home.

That’s when OP said his feelings didn’t matter, and he pushed to return the cat after realizing she acted unilaterally.

The argument escalated fast, because she called him overreacting while he kept standing his ground about consent and the decision process.

Now the silent treatment is in full swing, with his wife spending all her time with the black cat like he’s the one who ruined the plan.

He’s not just refusing a cat, he’s challenging the way the whole adoption happened.
