TRL was more than a music countdown, it was a daily dose of early-2000s pop culture that shaped how a whole generation dressed, styled their hair, and chased the latest trends.
Hosted by Carson Daly and packed with appearances from stars like Britney Spears, Destiny's Child, NSYNC, Christina Aguilera, and more, the MTV staple became a front-row seat to the era's biggest hits and most memorable looks.
These throwback photos capture the wild side of TRL fashion, and some of them are every bit as cringey as you remember.

Everything back then revolved around over-accessorizing, wearing as much sparkle and shimmer as possible, and blending and matching patterns, textures, and styles that agonizingly conflicted with each other. The superstars we saw on TRL were the fashion guinea pigs, and they would make appearances on the set in outfits that we now find cringe-worthy when we look back.
