Choosing My Comfort Over Sister: A Dilemma Over Inheriting Our Family Home
"Struggling with whether to prioritize personal space or support a needy sister in moving into their family home, seeking advice on the dilemma."
A 35-year-old woman is facing a family home dilemma that sounds simple at first, until you realize how much history is packed into it.
She inherited her childhood house with her 32-year-old sister, and now that sister wants to move in after a painful breakup. The problem is that the woman works from home, loves her quiet routine, and already knows her sister can be messy, loud, and disruptive.
Support and boundaries are colliding fast, and the answer is not nearly as obvious as it looks. Was she wrong to protect her peace?
So I'm a 35-year-old woman, and my sister, who's 32, recently went through a tough breakup and asked if she could move into our childhood home. For background, our parents left us this house in their will, and I currently live there alone.
I work from home and treasure the peace and quiet it provides me. My sister is struggling financially and emotionally, but she's also known to be messy, loud, and disruptive.
I'm torn because I want to support her, but I also value my space and independence greatly. She's been hinting at moving in, but hasn't outright asked.
I'm considering telling her that I'd rather maintain my living situation as it is, which would mean she'd have to find another place to stay. So, WIBTA for prioritizing my comfort over helping my sister in need?
Really need outside perspective.
That kind of family tension can get messy fast.
