Colleagues Constant Humming in the Office: AITA for Asking Him to Stop?
AITA for asking my colleague to stop humming in the office? My colleague's habit is driving me insane; despite a polite request, I'm unsure how to handle it.
A 28-year-old man is about to find out that “soft humming” can be the loudest thing in an open office.
He sits closest to Mark, a 30-year-old colleague who’s been humming to himself for weeks. It’s not blasting through the walls, but it’s constant, and the OP’s headphones barely take the edge off. What starts as a small annoyance turns into full-on irritation, especially because the office is open-plan and there’s nowhere to fully escape it.
He finally asked Mark to stop while they’re working, and Mark agreed… until today, when the humming came right back, even if it was a little quieter.

I (28M) work in a small office with open-plan cubicles. One of my colleagues, let's call him Mark (30M), has a habit of softly humming to himself throughout the day.
For weeks, this humming has slowly driven me insane. It's not loud or disruptive to others, but I sit closest to Mark, and I can hear it all day long.
At first, I tried to brush it off, thinking it was just a temporary thing. But as days turned into weeks, I found it increasingly aggravating.
I've tried using headphones, but it doesn't completely drown out the noise. I decided to confront Mark about it.
Yesterday, I politely asked him if he could try to refrain from humming while we were working, explaining that it was distracting for me. Mark seemed surprised but agreed.
However, today he started humming again, though a bit softer. I can still hear it, and I feel frustrated and unsure how to approach the situation now.
So, AITA?

OP tried to ignore Mark’s humming at first, but sitting right next to him made “temporary” feel like it lasted forever.
After OP politely confronted Mark and explained it was distracting, Mark acted surprised, then promised to refrain.

This office humming problem feels similar to a roommate underpaying utilities, where insisting on a fair share sparked tension.

The next day, Mark started humming again, softer this time, which somehow made OP even more annoyed.

Now OP is stuck wondering whether asking for silence was reasonable, or if he’s about to become “that guy” in the cubicles.
The situation presented in this article highlights the critical need to address noise issues in the workplace, especially in an open-plan setting where distractions can quickly escalate into significant frustrations. The colleague's soft humming, while not overtly disruptive, becomes an increasing source of annoyance for the person closest to them, illustrating how even minor disturbances can affect individual productivity and well-being. This scenario underscores the importance of open communication; discussing such grievances can lead to a more respectful and harmonious work environment. As the narrative suggests, fostering a culture that prioritizes positive interactions is essential, not just for individual comfort but for overall team cohesion.
Now OP’s wondering if he’s the problem, or if Mark is just tone-deaf to office life.
