Confronting Sister Over Inappropriate Behavior: AITA?

AITA for confronting my sister over inappropriate behavior towards a close friend? Opinions split on whether I was justified in calling out her rude and exclusionary actions.

A 28-year-old woman refused to ignore the awkward vibe in her own living room, and now she’s stuck in the fallout with her sister. The story starts normal enough, with her long-time friend Sarah, who’s been part of their circle for years, suddenly getting extra attention from her sister.

Then comes the birthday party, hosted by OP for another friend. Sarah shows up early to help, and OP’s sister is suddenly all inside jokes, loud laughter, constant attention, and sidelining everyone else to keep the conversation locked on Sarah. Even worse, after the party ends, OP catches her sister and Sarah in a deep talk, and OP’s sister makes a snide comment about a family friend that makes things instantly uncomfortable.

OP confronts her sister, Sarah admits she felt uneasy, and now the family dinner did not end well.

I (28F) have a close-knit group of friends, and one of them, let's call her Sarah, has been part of our circle for years. Recently, my sister (26F) started hanging out with Sarah more often, which seemed cool at first.

However, during a birthday party I hosted for another friend, things took a strange turn. Sarah arrived early to help set up, and my sister's behavior towards her seemed overly friendly.

She kept making inside jokes with Sarah, laughing loudly, and constantly seeking her attention. Throughout the party, I noticed my sister excluding others to talk only to Sarah.

When the party ended, I found my sister and Sarah in a deep conversation. As I approached, my sister made a snide comment about our family friend, who overheard and looked uncomfortable.

I immediately called out my sister, asking why she was being so rude and making Sarah feel awkward. My sister brushed it off, claiming she was just joking, but I could tell Sarah was hurt.

Later, when I asked Sarah about the interaction privately, she admitted feeling uneasy about my sister's sudden interest and behavior. I approached my sister again, explaining how her actions were inappropriate and made Sarah feel unwelcome.

My sister got defensive, saying I was overreacting and that she was just trying to bond with Sarah. Now, tensions are high between us, and my sister refuses to acknowledge that her behavior was out of line.

I'm torn between standing up for our family friend and keeping the peace with my sister. So AITA?

OP notices her sister excluding other people at her birthday party, and that’s when the “just being friendly” excuse starts to feel fake.

When OP overhears the snide comment about a family friend, the vibe shifts from awkward to straight-up rude.

After OP checks in with Sarah privately and Sarah says she felt hurt, OP has even less patience for her sister’s “I was joking” defense.

Now that OP confronted her sister twice and her sister refuses to admit she crossed a line, tensions are high and Sarah is stuck in the middle again.

How would you handle this situation? Let us know in the comments.

The real question is whether OP’s sister was bonding with Sarah, or trying to replace everyone else in the room.
