Woman Calls The Cops On Her Boyfriend And His Family For Illegally Moving Into Her Vacation Home Without Her Knowledge
He stole her keys and basically said, "You don't understand, honey, I had to help my family."
People in relationships sometimes find it difficult to remain separate individuals. This can't be helped when two people spend so much time together that they pick up on each other's habits and behaviors.
This isn't the case when it comes to personal properties, however. Unless you're married—and even then it's not a done deal—your properties are yours alone.
This respect for each other's individual assets couldn't have been made any clearer for a Reddit user and her now ex-boyfriend. OP (original poster) is a 28-year-old London resident who has inherited a holiday home from her grandmother.
Some details that will be relevant to OP's story are as follows: OP is rarely at the holiday home, given that it's a five-hour drive away from London. Second, the keys to the home are on a rack at her London house, and lastly, there are security cameras in the holiday home that alert OP when there are people present.
Her boyfriend has a brother who recently had his fourth child. The problem is that the family of six lives in a tiny, two-bedroom apartment.
Recently, her boyfriend's brother, along with his wife and kids, visited OP and her boyfriend at their house. The conversation flowed easily enough, and they discussed everything they could think of while OP was holding the newborn.
For some reason, OP's holiday home was brought into the conversation. Her boyfriend's brother mentioned that it has more than enough space for him and his wife to live with their four kids.
To which OP bluntly replied: "Yeah, but I'm not gonna let you live there, so..."
Her response hung in the air like a lead balloon, and the couple went quiet. Soon after that, they started to gather their things and left a few minutes later.
OP's boyfriend had no comment about that particular conversation, but OP's guilt was gnawing at her. She felt like she could have responded a bit more gently to their "request," since she knew how badly they needed a bigger place.
One morning, OP woke up to go to work, only to realize her boyfriend was already gone. She didn't think much of it because his job starts pretty early.
When she was about to go out the door, she noticed that the keys to her holiday home were no longer hanging on the rack. She looked around for a bit, but they were nowhere to be found.
OP called her boyfriend next; he didn't answer the call for the first two tries, but on the third one, he mercifully picked up. OP asked if he had seen the keys to her other house, and he replied that he had them.
She asked why he had them, and the boyfriend replied that he just grabbed them by accident and would return them as soon as he was home. With that issue settled, OP went about her day and got to work.

Six people in a two-bedroom apartment certainly sucks.

"Grabbed them by accident."

Half a day later, while OP was working, she got a notification from her holiday home's security system.
She opened the notification and saw her boyfriend, his brother, and his family all outside her holiday home. The biggest shocker was that there was a moving van behind them, which amplified OP's anger.
When OP got home, her boyfriend was there waiting for her, acting like everything was normal. OP blew up and started yelling at him.
She asked him why he would move his family into her home without her permission. He tried to justify his actions by saying he "had to help his family," which made OP angrier.
OP gave him a day to move his family out of her home, or she would call the police on all of them for trespassing.

The dramatic turn of events happened over 12 hours ago before OP originally posted this on Reddit. She was asking for advice on whether she would be a jerk if she followed through with her threat.
eebookey
Redditors didn't waste any time telling OP to immediately call the police and that, no, she wouldn't be an a**hole for doing so.
Pretend-Panda
Her boyfriend and his family deliberately blindsided OP, and she should go to the proper authorities before it becomes a bigger problem.
Pretend-Panda
OP was actually pretty level-headed throughout the confrontation.
APotatoPancake
Apparently, OP isn't too alone in her problem with unwanted house guests...
nudethreats
... but OP's problem is vastly different from the plight of desperate people in need of genuine housing.
motherof_geckos
They should have planned having children better before having four of them.
Agreeable_Spite
They saw an opportunity and wanted to take advantage of OP.
MagicEveryDay
OP's jerk of a boyfriend disrespected every boundary OP had, and she should double-check everything because this guy cannot be trusted.
Lessaaaa
Change all the locks, OP, because there is a big possibility that they made copies of your house keys.
pittsburgpam
It's not OP's responsibility to provide them with a more comfortable home when they already had one.
HattieTheSwann
This wasn't a spontaneous move-in; this plan has been in the works for some time, which is even more troublesome to think about.
HattieTheSwann
They actually didn't even ask. They made a statement that OP's holiday home would be a better place to raise their kids, and when she said no, they went on and moved in anyway. The cheek, the nerve, the gall, the audacity, and the gumption!
Various-Bridge-325
OP should call the police soon and end the relationship even faster!
UnicornsAreChubby
After everyone's assurance that she wouldn't be an a**hole for calling the police, OP followed through with her ultimatum and called the cops on her boyfriend and his family.

They tried resisting but eventually packed their belongings and moved out. OP also broke up with the jerk who has been contacting her non-stop. They're blaming her for the ordeal, but OP is blissful after blocking all of them.
eebookey
Did they really think they could get away with what they did?
Remote-Ability-6575
In another comment, OP mentioned that her boyfriend actually knows about the security in the home but went on with their plan anyway. Was he stupid or banking on OP's compassion, thinking that since they were already there, what could she do?
eebookey
It was a bad plan, but it's more evident now that the dust has settled. When they mentioned OP's spacious home and their large family, they were expecting her to offer her place. When she shut that down, they moved in anyway, hoping their "determination" would sway her.
synaesthezia
They were definitely pulling out all of the emotional stops to make OP give in to their plea.
GroundbreakingLuck94
The biggest and most bald-faced a**hole here is OP's ex. He lied to her about his intentions with the keys and tried to justify his theft. Glad he's an ex now.
Hatstand82
The silver lining is that all of this happened before OP and her now-ex were married. OP would have had an even more difficult time establishing boundaries if they were legally bound to each other.
Her ex obviously didn't have any issues deceiving OP and taking advantage of her kindness when he saw fit. Good thing OP had a good head on her shoulders, and despite her initial hesitation, she managed to get rid of her parasitic boyfriend and his baggage.
