Cousin Kicked Out of Car for Fake Shoplifting Pranks: AITA?

AITA for kicking my cousin out of my car for pretending to shoplift? Family says I need to "lighten up," but I don't play with potential legal trouble.

Some cousins treat the mall like a stage, and in this story, OP’s cousin picked the one prank that could land them both in real trouble. It wasn’t a harmless laugh, it was fake shoplifting, yelled loud enough for store workers to notice.

OP, 18, is just trying to hang out with their 19-year-old cousin, who thinks “pranks” mean acting like a clown in public, whispering “bro lets dip” while pretending to stuff items in his jacket. When OP tells him to stop, he doubles down at the next store, sprinting to the door like he’s fleeing loss prevention. OP refuses to play along, walks out, and gives him a hard deadline to meet at the car.

Now the family group chat is calling OP the problem, and the cousin is saying OP ruined the fun.

Original Post

I (18M) was at the mall with my cousin (19M). He thinks he is hilarious and always does “pranks,” which is just him acting like a clown in public.

At one store he started pretending to put stuff in his jacket and whispering “bro lets dip” to me. Loud enough that workers were looking.

I told him to knock it off. He kept doing it in the next store too, like holding a hat under his hoodie and fake sprinting to the door.

I don’t play with cops or loss prevention. I straight up walked out and told him I was leaving.

He laughed and called me dramatic. I told him if he wasn’t at the car in 2 minutes I was driving home.

He finally came, still laughing. I told him he was embarrassing and could get us actually accused of something.

He called me lame and “no fun.” So I told him to get out of my car and figure his own ride home. He TEXTED me later saying I made him “look stupid” and our family group chat is now saying I need to “lighten up.” AITA?

She notes that when humor crosses into potentially harmful territory, it can lead to misunderstandings and conflict. In this case, the cousin's prank may have been intended as light-hearted, but it disregarded the serious implications of shoplifting.

OP is trying to shut it down, but the cousin keeps whispering “bro lets dip” loud enough for workers to look.

The incident at the mall highlights a delicate balance between humor and its potential repercussions. While humor can reinforce social bonds, the cousin's prank, which involved fake shoplifting, crossed a line into discomfort and anxiety. This act not only put the cousin in an awkward position but also raised concerns about the impact on family dynamics, particularly when one party fears the serious fallout from a seemingly harmless joke.

In navigating social interactions, it is crucial to consider the audience and the context. For the Redditor, the prank turned into a moment of tension rather than levity, suggesting that humor should always be inclusive and sensitive to the feelings of those involved. As this debate unfolds, it serves as a reminder that what may seem like a lighthearted joke to one person can be a source of stress for another.

When they hit the next store and he’s pretending to hide a hat under his hoodie, OP finally decides he’s out.

Also, this chaos feels like the debt-stricken stay-at-home mom refusing to share side income with her spendthrift husband.

Family members often play a significant role in shaping personal values and decision-making.

In this context, the cousin’s prank could reflect a lack of understanding of the seriousness of theft, pointing to a need for family discussions about morality and the impact of actions. Open discussions can help guide younger members toward more responsible choices.

The deadline in the parking lot, “be here in 2 minutes or I’m driving home,” is where the tension goes from awkward to explosive.

Establishing a set of agreed-upon boundaries regarding humor could have prevented this uncomfortable fallout.
