Coworker Brings Noisy Pet Turtle to Office: AITA for Asking Her to Keep It at Home?

AITA for asking my coworker to keep her noisy pet turtle at home, despite its importance for her anxiety relief?

A 28-year-old woman refused to let a pet turtle hijack her office day, and honestly, it is harder to focus on spreadsheets when someone’s “Sheldon” is doing laps like a tiny tank on a schedule.

Her coworker, Sarah, brought her pet turtle to work after the office switched to a pet-friendly policy. Sheldon roams around his tank constantly, and the filter system makes noticeable noise, especially during team meetings. OP says the sound is distracting, derailing concentration, and making meetings feel louder than they need to be.

But when OP asked Sarah to keep Sheldon at home, Sarah got visibly upset, because the turtle helps her with anxiety and she genuinely enjoys having him around.

Original Post

So, I (28F) work in an office where we recently shifted to a pet-friendly policy. My coworker, Sarah, brought her pet turtle named Sheldon to work.

Sheldon is quite active and constantly roams around his tank, making a lot of noise due to the filter system. Now, I love pets, but the noise is becoming distracting during our team meetings and affecting our concentration.

I kindly asked Sarah if she could possibly keep Sheldon at home as his activity is disrupting the work environment. She seemed taken aback and mentioned that Sheldon helps her with anxiety and she enjoys having him around.

I totally understand its importance, but the noise is a real issue. Sarah has been visibly upset since our conversation.

I feel bad for potentially causing her distress, but the noise is genuinely affecting our work. AITA for asking her to keep Sheldon at home?

I value our work relationship and don't want to create unnecessary tension. So, AITA?

OP’s first polite request about Sheldon’s noise lands like a personal attack, right in the middle of those team meetings.

Sarah shoots back that Sheldon is her anxiety support and that she likes having him in the office, not just for the vibes.

The real tension kicks in when OP realizes Sarah is upset, but the filter noise is still messing with everyone’s focus.

Now OP is stuck between keeping the peace with Sarah and protecting the work environment from Sheldon’s constant tank soundtrack.

OP might have meant “keep it quieter,” but she accidentally turned a pet-friendly perk into a full-on workplace standoff.
