Artist Shares His Nightmare-Fueled Versions Of Scooby-Doo Villains, And They Will Keep You Awake At Night

"I made creepy paintings redesigning the villains of Scooby-Doo."

A Scooby-Doo villain is supposed to be a little spooky, a little goofy, and maybe hiding behind a mask. This artist took that comforting formula and dragged it into the dark, painting nightmares that make “mystery gang” feel like a warning label.

First came the familiar lineup, The Creeper, Ghost Of Elias Kingston, Ghost Clown, Charlie The Robot, and The Wax Phantom, each one pushed into over-the-top comic-book horror. Then the series kept going, The Green Ghosts, Space Kook, The Black Knight, The Witch Doctor, and a whole parade of cursed returns like Ghost Of Zen Tuo, Miner Forty Niner, Redbeard, Puppet Master, Mr. Hyde, and The Ape Man.

And here’s the twist, the artist says these were cherished characters, so the “funny” part is exactly what makes it unsettling.

That’s when the paintings stop feeling like fan art and start feeling like the villains are picking their targets, like Fred is the one they go after first.

The whole thing gets even creepier once Ghost Clown and Charlie The Robot share the same world as The Wax Phantom and The Green Ghosts.

The artist says: "I loved painting these and experimenting with beloved characters, bringing some of the over-the-top comic book looks to some of the villains. The hard part is that these are cherished characters, so you might kill Fred a couple of times because it's funny. You're thinking, in many ways, he is the most capable character, so of course, the bad guys would go for him first. To you, he was always the positive, athletic boy scout that you did not relate to, but to some people, he is their guy, and they get mad when you mess with him, and they let you know about it."

It also echoes the argument in Friends who got tested by one stay over a tarantula and arachnophobia.

By the time you hit Mr. Hyde, The Ape Man, and Ghost Of Zen Tuo, the gallery vibe is basically “good luck sleeping.”

And if The Phantom, Headless Specter, Witch And Zombie, and all those cereal-mascot plans are next, the mystery gang might be in trouble for real.

The artist created a series of cartoon villains, exploring He-Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Powerpuff Girls, Transformers, etc. They have also begun looking back at cereal mascots, exploring what they would be like in real-world scenarios.

The artist still enjoys playing with Scooby-Doo and has plans to create modern-day mashups of Scooby-Doo with pop culture icons. We can't wait.

You’ll never look at Mystery Inc. the same way again after these nightmares.
