Artist Shares His Nightmare-Fueled Versions Of Scooby-Doo Villains, And They Will Keep You Awake At Night
"I made creepy paintings redesigning the villains of Scooby-Doo."
Kyle La Fever is an illustrator, designer, and comic book and storyboard artist who is a big fan of art and pop culture. Originally planning only to create five or six paintings, La Fever ended up dedicating 200 hours to redesigning the villains of Scooby-Doo, giving them power upgrades and making them genuinely scary.
La Fever wanted to be an artist from the moment he realized it was someone's job to draw comic books. Although it did not come easy, he saw steady growth and attended college for art. During the COVID-19 pandemic, La Fever bought a new tablet and software and began doing digital paintings during a life drawing class.
This eventually led to the successful Scooby-Doo series, which La Fever started in October as a way to relive the first ghost stories he remembered from the "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?" show.
I started the series in October. I was reflecting on my childhood and realized that the Scooby-Doo series was probably the first ghost stories I ever heard. Those villains were always iconic-looking, but just people in masks.
I wanted to explore what if those villains were a real threat, genuinely scary, and had serious power upgrades. I was only expecting to do five or six through October, but the feedback was so positive that I kept the series going.

The artist says: "I loved painting these and experimenting with beloved characters, bringing some of the over-the-top comic book looks to some of the villains. The hard part is that these are cherished characters, so you might kill Fred a couple of times because it's funny. You're thinking, in many ways, he is the most capable character, so of course, the bad guys would go for him first. To you, he was always the positive, athletic boy scout that you did not relate to, but to some people, he is their guy, and they get mad when you mess with him, and they let you know about it."

The artist created a series of cartoon villains, exploring He-Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Powerpuff Girls, Transformers, etc. They have also begun looking back at cereal mascots, exploring what they would be like in real-world scenarios.
The artist still enjoys playing with Scooby-Doo and has plans to create modern-day mashups of Scooby-Doo with pop culture icons. We can't wait.
