Debating Splitting the Bill at a Fancy Dinner: AITA for Suggesting Individual Tabs?

AITA for suggesting a fair bill-splitting method at a fancy dinner, causing discomfort among friends?

A 28-year-old woman tried to keep a fancy dinner “fair,” and somehow managed to turn a celebratory night into an awkward group standoff. It was supposed to be a fun meal to celebrate everyone’s recent accomplishments, picked at a high-end restaurant where the vibe is basically dress-up and order whatever your heart wants.

But once people started placing orders, OP’s anxiety kicked in. She wanted the bill split based on what each person actually ordered, because not everyone went big on the expensive dishes. So when the moment came, she suggested separate checks, one tab per person, instead of an even split. Her friends did not react the way she expected, looking offended and questioning why she couldn’t just do the “normal” equal split.

Now OP is stuck replaying the whole night, wondering if she was being rigid or if her friends were the ones being unreasonable.

Original Post

So I'm (28F) and my friends and I decided to have a fancy dinner to celebrate our recent accomplishments. We picked a high-end restaurant where everyone could enjoy a luxurious meal.

As the dinner progressed and everyone started ordering, I began to worry about the bill splitting. I wanted us to split the cost equitably based on orders since some chose expensive dishes and others kept it simple.

So, I proposed a method where we divide the bill as per individual tabs at the end. My friends looked taken aback, some even seemed offended, questioning why I couldn't just split it evenly.

But in my view, it seemed unfair for people who ordered less expensive items. Amidst the tension, the bill arrived, and I stuck to my plan, requesting separate checks which the waiter obliged.

The atmosphere turned awkward, and some friends seemed visibly upset. Now, reflecting on it, I wonder if my approach was too rigid or if they were being unreasonable.

So AITA?

Right when the table started ordering, OP realized the expensive plates were going to make the “even split” feel unfair to her.

Her friends got thrown off the moment she proposed individual tabs, like she’d insulted their math skills.

The waiter actually brought separate checks, and that’s when the celebrations basically turned into a silent staring contest.

By the time the bill was handled, OP could tell some of her friends were visibly upset, and now she’s questioning whether she pushed too hard.

The fancy dinner wasn’t ruined by the restaurant, it was ruined by the split.

Still not convinced? See how the OP got called a “drama queen” for item-based tabs.
